I heard he has become an actor working with Brendan O'Carrol. Pity he's not on 2fm any more - he was perfect for the jukebox show he used to do on sunday afternoons.
By the way does anyone remember the tv series he did one summer called "pay the price" - terrible stuff! |

Like Ginger i have remained in contact with Simon and sad to say his condition is not great but we live in hope.I have always stated that Simon was one of the few gentlemen in the business. He has a great heart and a wonderful sense of humour.A real man of the old school and a fine fine broadcaster as well. There can be very few people in the business that will get a totally positive reaction from all comers and Simon is one of those.

I would also like to say that I am very sorry to hear that Simon Young has not been well for quite some time. My earliest memories of his time broadcasting were on the then RTE Radio 2FM on a show he used to present called "Simon's Choice" or "Simon's Saturday Choice" on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the late 1980's. "Hey Simon, What toimme is iiit? came from that period I think? If I remember correctly, another great show, "Dial a Number One" presented by Gerry Wilson followed at 1 or 2 p.m. and that was classic radio too. I think Simon used to showcase new talent and I particularly recall how he gave Bros a big plug as they were making it big (albeit for a short time) with the song "When will I be famous". Apparently the lads from Bros had Irish connections (maybe Northern Ireland) so, he was very generous in his encouragement of them starting out! "Choice" was a marketing tool that Bank Of Ireland used and they offered cheap "Fair Cards" for Under 26yrs age group at the time but you had to open a "Choice" account at Bank of Ireland at the time and you got these travel vouchers as a result!- CIE was broken up into three companies in 1987 so, that's when it began. Simon used to often fill in for Iano alot including "Dempsey's Den" on Network 2 TV and when Dustin arrived on the scene 1-2yrs after Zig+Zag were introduced Simon could be seen in convulsions laughing at Dustin which at times rendered him speechless on camera! Powerful stuff. Simon did other shows too including "The BeatBox" and the 2FM Weekend Breakfast Show on Sat/Sun in the late 1990's as I recall he was on air when I awoke on a Sunday in late August '97 to hear that Princess Diana had died suddenly. Simon's also did Jimmy for a stint on Iano's breky show on 2fm for a while although I do believe that the original Jimmy was someone else? Simon definitely did the 30mins "Jimmy slot" on weekend 2fm around '92/'93 period and Simon's Jimmy coined the phrase "Gerr outta dat garrrdin!" I hope that like Tony Fenton, Simon Young will return to the national airwaves soon, pending good health because he IS (present tense) a very fine and talented broadcaster and there's NOONE out there like him! RTE 2FM should never have continued with "Ireland's Biggest Jukebox" after Simon had gone. In fact, it's as if 2fm stole the idea from the now defunct Century 100 FM who had "The Biggest Jukebox in Ireland" however, they seemed more active in playing listeners requests rather than the 2fm version of recent years. Simon get well and I hope you are planning a major comeback at home while you recover. Take good care & hope you can return soon!

Could I possibly have heard Simon doing some voice overs on ads over Christmas? Couldn't be sure but sounded like him...

Re: Where is Simon Young?
Yeah he was an excellent jock with a great distintive barotone voice. Correct me if I'm wrong Petero but didnt Simon co-host "Pop-a-rama" on "Radio2" with Ruth Buchanan in the early 80s? I'm sure I remember him doing that gig at way back when.

Re: Where is Simon Young?
Yes Simon did co-present Poporama with Ruth, Jeff Harris was the first co-presenter... others were Barry Lang, Ian Dempsey and I think Tony Fenton.
