High End CD players - worth it for broadcast?
I was wondering if the high end cd players such as those recommended by what hifi magazine are worth the investment for broadcast use? I'm using ten year old technics hi fi separate cd players at present but am pondering if a cd player upgrade will improve the on air sound.
My mixer is also a basic model from 10 years ago but is giving no problems. Which would be the better upgrade? |

reasons why broadcasters should use good CD players
1) A cheap player is hardly going to have the build quality to be subjected to the rigors of heavy duty 24/7 use and still be reliable 2) The audio processing used in most stations probably shows up the deficencies of any equipment feeding into it crap in = crap out Its madness paying two grand or more on an optimod or omnia and feed it from a €50 CD player 3) Anyone listening to your station on a decent hi-fi will definitely notice even if listeners on portable radios dont Its also worth using decent cabling between the CD player and mixer. Even if the sonic benefits are debatable they certainly make for sturdier (i.e. reliable) connections |

Not to be confused with high-end CD players as featured in the hi-fi magazines, players designed for broadcast use are built for more continuous use, as well as abuse.
They also tend to incorporate remote control and fader start options. The broadcast Denons such as the DN-951's use a cassette to hold the CD which protects the CD itself from being handled each time you want to use it. You get what you pay for. Phil Transmitters 'R' Us |

Take the lowly mini-disc, untouchable inside its little plastic shell so never likely to get easily damaged. When you insert it into the MD player a small sliding door opens back to expose the disc itself INSIDE the player. Now look at your CD and DVD collection, how many have been damaged only to be replaced...so it costs you even more money by unnecessary duplication of your beloved collection. Its even more frustrating when they're "hard to find" CDs/DVDs ![]() Rant over....for now! Last edited by The Doc; 4th January 2006 at 19:23. |
