How can you claim " Stairway to heaven " was an under-rated track when it possibly one of the most adored songs of the 70s/80s by every fan of good music. Also you mention "London calling" which was also a huge radio song at the time and idolized by the fans of good music. The same could be said of some the other songs you mentioned ie: Lately, Changes and even tempted and in fact most of the songs you mentioned .
I am sorry Euan nip out of your comfy computer chair and get a dictionary and look up the meaning of the words " under-rated " If you do you will find it says
" To fail to understand how skilful, important, etc. (someone or something) is"
I think we all realize how important and skillful the above songs were to a musical society. Euan you would just love to hear these songs on radio today and you have said this before and i am sorry why not try living in the now. Most of the ILR radio audience don’t want to hear them and if they do they will go and buy

Jim Bob,
As you are one of the few that goes out of your way to look for the slightest fault in my postings, let me just say, it was in "MY OWN OPINION" not someone else's. Is that okay with you. Do i need your permission or somthing to have a opinion of my own.
Jim Bob, please try and be a bit more positive towards these posts as they don't always revolve around you solely, so you can relax. I respect your opinion concerning Led Zepplin's "Stairway To Heaven" song, and many others in the sense that you felt they weren't under-rated tunes, and that's fine with me. Zepplin and others i felt were under-rated. Difference of opinion that's all.
The reason for this in my opinion was that many radio stations particularly the more 25 - 44 demo stations were put off by the length of the song. Furthermore, if you were lucky enough 98 or 2FM in their early days when they had the "Classic Hits" format only aired it on low rotation. Today the same can be said for 2FM and Today FM. So to summarize, the song is rarely afforded it's due credit in terms of the positive impact it made on other Rock bands producing a classic tune of the 70's or 80's era.
Finally your last point on the ILR audience don't want to hear such music. I believe do, but PD's and station bosses have a blinkered view on some of its audience. Not all of us like the Kylie's, Destiny's Mary J Bliege's of this world. These artists are good and are talented, but there is ample room for other artists that i have mentioned to be given some status by way of airplay on radio. i just don't buy what your saying. And yes there is demand for this music despite what you say.

There's plenty in those lists as food for thought for the PDs. As has been shown in a couple of other threads, the music policy of LOADS of the stations is missing out on a huge audience.
I'd have to dispute that "anyone who wants to hear any of those songs can go out and buy them".....you're unlikely to be able to find loads of them.
That's one of the main ironies that's puzzled me for quite a while.....every commercial station plays it's variation of the "Hot seven at seven", "Top eight at eight" etc.....THESE are the very songs that ARE and the kids voting for them have bought that week - if they've bought them and put them top of the charts, why do they need to ring in to ask for them on the radio?
I know that in the 80s, etc, we used to listen to the charts on the pirates, but to me they were better (because they didn't have all the various category charts) and there was some variety (along with the fact that we didn't have the dosh to buy all the stuff we liked, so maybe I'm being too judgemental, but to me there is NO point whatsoever in buying whatever is number one - you'll hear it about 500 times on the radio this week anyway....

Ahhhh now...Back in my day,the bbc charts were the ONLY charts to listen to(as the Irish chart was SOOOOOO far behind).Dead right though about it being better,or was it just that we hadn't go access to the music like we do today.Want to hear a tune..onto the web we go,or dl it from the many available sites.Plus I think the energy of the chart shows was a lot better than today.Just my opinion.
As regards the classic trax mentioned in other posts,Personally I think thetre is a massive market uncatered for with the wealth of classic rock history has recorded.PD's need to wake up to the nedds of the listener.
