Was just wondering what is your prefered version of Microsoft Windows?? Both for personal and radio/music use?I was running Win98 untill last week I changed to WinME.

I have run XP in the past on the same computer but i found it slow and it seemed to crash a bit! The Computer I use was built with intentions to run XP so all the hardware specs are there, so the crashing wasnt anything to do with that! Didnt like the fact it is compulsory that you have to register XP with Microsoft either!

ME seems to run programs alot faster than 98 and XP! Editing software esp seems to run better than XP!

Just wondering what your thoughts are!?

WinME is probably the worst of bunch. It's the most buggy version of Windows around. Providing you have up-to-date hardware then XP is fine if you want all the "bells and whistles".

However, for rock-solid reliability then Windows2000 Pro is only option. Drivers are available for pretty-much everything, and you can be sure that if you're using it for audio and/or radio - it'll perform.

XP is too clever for it's own good, and we decided against it when we read the EULA to SP1 !

I have XP and had problems at first.
It used to crash all the time and the message I got always said that it had something to do with the anti-virus I was running....it was Norton.
So I uninstalled Norton and installed McAfee and haven't had a problem since.

Is ME that bad?? Anybody else have problems?? So far no probs for me!

The computer was as up to date as you could get with hardware! Still, XP was always very slow and crashy. Even basic multitasking was crashing it! Ended going back to 98 for a while because I find it reliable! I did have a prob, like you Cassie, with the antivirus also. Just upgraded the Norton I was using, which i had to do anyway!

I use Win98 on this pc and WinME on the other and have never had much of a problem with either. I personally think XP was created by the devil!!!!! :)

I use Win XP Professional at home, i'd stay away from XP home anyways. OS of choice would be Windows 2000 Pro.

If it's installed correctly and is running on even semi-decent hardware then XP is the leader by far (either pro or home).

Win 2000 is a close 2nd.

Forget 95/98/ME - not worth a damn unless your running it on a sub 300Mhz PC.

And rather pointless since there are cracks for both the activation process and installation key floating around on most of the well known P2P sites.

The only effect of all this big brother nonsense is to make windows installation more difficult for those who actually have a legit copy of windows

Ive stopped recommenting Norton antivirus products to customers since they brought in product activation simple because I dont like companies who treat their paying customers like criminals

I have tried Win98, which is probably the the most reliable, but is now out of date, you have a problem and it costs £40 per hour from MS to sort out, si idecided to move to ME...DISASTER, NEVER AGAIN, this almost wrecked all my audio hardware and software, went back to win98se, but found it toooooo slow, and eventually settled on XP Pro which IMO is great, not one problem, and for some of my older soundcards such as EMU, i just upgraded with a patch software from EMU.

I think it is luck of the draw myself!!

you cant run 2 anti-virus apps on 1 machine - they will always conflict, regardless of the operating system. while Im here, my money's on Win2k pro as well

I think you misunderstood me.
I wasn't running them at the same time.
Norton was the original anti-virus that I had the whole time I had it on my machine it kept crashing.
I then got rid of Norton and got McAfee and haven't had any trouble at all since.

I'm not to smart about computers, so this may sound dumb...but I uninstalled Norton completely it's gone from the machine.
The only one I have now is McAfee.
The computer works great now, no trouble at all.

hi again,
thats correct. even if you only run 1 anti-virus app, it will conflict if there is another on your machine, not running. thats why you had to completely un-install one to get the other working... get it?

I recommend Norton over McAfee any day. of course, neither is going to offer comprehensive protection unless you perform regular updates of 'virus definitions'

phew....

Let's not forget that there is also no substitute for common-sense. Just because you have a Firewall or AntiVirus, doesn't mean it's going to work.

Not opening weird/un-expected e-mail attachments is a start. Many nasties are written for Internet Explorer, by using ActiveX - a website can take over your PC, redirect you to "adult" sites or even log your keystrokes.

Strange that the software written by the biggest company on planet earth is full of security flaws, yet the most secure is not only written by Joe Public, but also free

My McAfee is always kept up to date.
The Norton kept crashing my computer so I'm much happier with McAfee.
But I guess these things work different on different computers.

Hi all,

Just point out that for the most part microsoft software tends to be pretty poor no matter what os you are using.

From my time working in computers:

win 95, 98 and 98me are all built on the old DOS operating system which means in a general sense they are built on a very old way of doing things.

I remember reading an article when win 95 was first released saying that microsoft knew that it was only 50% working. But hey they can charge you for the fixes. You have got to admire the balls of that company.

win NT was designed to be implemented in more of a business enviroment and that is why directx updatess were never progressed. In other words being able to play games and audio was never a priority in most businesses. The system itself is very stable, rarely crashes and is very secure. If set up correctly for the most part.

Win 2000 and xp were then designed on the NT architecture. For the most part these are stable enough products, once again if set up properly.

XP has alot more bells and whisles, it tries to do alot of the technical stuff for you which sometimes can cause problems.

For the most part none of us need such a robust operating system. Most crashes are caused by poorly designed software or your system not set up correctly.

Personally I use win2000 and xp pro on one system. win xp home on a second pc and laptop. I cant remember the last time any of them crashed.
