Yes

do maplin sell anything that will do ?QUOTE]
No Maplin aerials are designed for RECIEVING only and have 73 ohm impedance
Transmitters usually put out 52Ohms and so wont match a 73 ohm aerial correctly (Maplin do sell RG213 cable though which is the kind you need to connect your TX to the aerial)

You DEFINITLY need an SWR meter yes !"

any advice will help.

thanks.

Go for the 5/8 wave vertical antenna from veronica. It has good gain for an omni directional setup of 4dB and has a power handling of 150 Watts

Simga Wireless ,Dublin where you can buy a SDH100 for appox €120 .This antenna works and will last many years.Have also used a CAT100 it has a better radiation patten in some circumstances.
SDH100 folded dipole
CAT100 colliner rod
