View Full Version : Radio DJs doing club gigs

This was a popular trend that has sadly faded in the last few years of National DJs like Gerry Ryan, Tony Fenton, Mark Cagney, Dave Fanning, Gareth O'Callaghan, Jim O'Neill doing club gigs/DJ Tours.

I have memories of been at discos where these played country-wide and were in high demand....Anyone else have any memories of this??

Do DJs not require the extra cash anymore or has the whole dance culture taken over?

Many 2FM jocks still do gigs around the country - although the "big names" like Larry and Gareth are a bit past it. Many of the jocks tend to keep it a bit quiet now though - tax man is listening and all that.

In Dublin the money probably isn't good enough - unless its a specialist gig, Dubs really don't care whos playing the Kylie and "Brown Eyed Girl" when they're pissed in a late night bar! I do know several jocks from Dublin ILR stations who do 1/2/3 gigs a week, but nothing out of this world.

Yes the DJ's DO require the CASH from doing gigs.......

Tell you what have a look at a few DJ websites in Dublin (I'm not dropping any names, type Dublin DJ's etc etc into your search engine) and you will see the amount of on-air jocks doing gigs......

Nearly everyone on the Dublin ILR's still gigs (except for the majority of auld fellas) but they wouldnt necesaarily want the taxman knowing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah true, there are a fair few doin it but maybe just not shoutin about it, again .... not a lot of ppl wud know (or care)who's spinnin the tunes late at nite in a pub, they're more likely to be wonderin how long they have till closin time to get hammered!

a few of the fm104 jocks dj in the hole in the wall over the weekend. but sarah is right. noone really cares who's playing the music once there's booze available. no doubt they're getting fairly handsomely paid for their services.

I disagree Yamo

A great night out is made up of loads of tiny little things (drink prices/door staff attitude/how many people you know there/decor/sound/lights etc) but the buck stops with the DJ as far as the buzz about the place is concerned.

People can get get "hammered" *anywhere* ......... yet ask most people why they go to a certain club or bar and they'll usually say "music/people/atmosphere" .......... the DJ is responsible for 2 of these things (given that he has decent lights and sound to work with), the "people" end of it is down to the club's manager, security and reputation

True Kelly, but the punters in Dublin don't care WHO is playing the music as long as the music is good...

Are there any Legal Jocks djing in clubs these days? I know it was a big thing in the 80's to see. But I dont hear of it much. I'm not just talking about the Dance scene. I know that obviously they are at club work also on radio thats why they do dance shows. But the likes of breakie jocks - afternoon - Drive - Evening - Night - Overnight. Anyone know?

Is it above there on-air gig? If no / Who does it and where? / Are they any goog?

Or is it a PR thing, out there with the listeners?

Or is it that they get lots of money for it / if so how much?

And how do you contact them for a gig? Agency / Station.

Is that enough questions?

Thanks

Silentype.

Hi Ian no I dont mean that! I was talking about Legal radio station DJ's. And this question was because I know that alot of Pirate (illegal) station Dj's are giging about in clubs about the country.
Sorry if this caused you any offence!

Yes Ian, you probably should've been arrested several years ago!

I'm a Dublin ILR jock and I do 2-3 gigs a week, late night bar stuff, nothing Superstar DJ Eyeball Paul stuff, but enough to keep me going till pay day!
