"but the whole point of a well placed, well eq'd, well controlled p.a is that it sounds even in every part of the venue"

Disagree -

A P.A. certainly does not have to sound even in every part of the venue. It has to sound well all right in all parts of the venue but not at the same volume throughout.
Go to any venue that Liam Rabitte has done the install with a turbosound rig and tell me it's not as good as any other in the city!
Good Sound Systems.
Fireworks (allthough a bit bassy in the DJ box)
Tamango
Savannah (allthough now limited due to nearby residents)
New Scholars Bar
Coyote

I don't think that's what Pulse meant. Obviously you don't want "booming sound" in a seated part of a club / discobar, but quality is the key, you don't want "distorted sound" or "deafening sound".

The amount of places I've been where the infill speakers are farting like hell but yet ther's no level because DJ's driving the crap out of the mixer.

A limiter can only do so much, and is f**k all use if you send over modulated signal into it!!

Warmth is more important than volume in my opinion and having worked in the installation business before, I know a decent soundsystem when I hear one and they don't have to be overly loud 'cos your ears WILL adjust.

Classic example of crap was the old Mono one. Great for Live, but crap as a club. All that was down to was the compression and eq being arse-ways.

I agree with Pulse in so far as the best Soundsystem in Dublin has to be RedBox. Enigma in Carrickmacross is wicked and Milk in Belfast gets my vote for the North.

Best Discobar would be Fireworx

Best System I ever heard in a club is the New JBL install in Ministry of Sound. Warm, perfectly eq'd, and ballsy!

It seems like such a waste tho' when all that's wrong is the EQ :S

IMHO a lot of it seems to be down to underpowered systems - with amps of very high wattages now available at lower cost there is just no excuse for this anymore.
