The fleet of UKTV channels like UK Gold, UK Drama etc are the latest to add a red dot to there services.. Great. Now Ill be spending more time trying to figure out a way to get these annoying things off the screen than watching the programmes. Why cant they have a setting that allows people to put them on or off as they choose?

Press the backup button on your remote. Works for me

The Red dot actually added by the receiver, by instructions sent from the SKY Interactive transmission suite in question.
This is so, if you have your box set to 4:3 or 16:9, it will still appear on the far right.
Unlike the transmission channel Logo, which is added at the transmission suite, as it part of the video stream.
So, Yes, use the back up button to toggle it on or off. However this is Probably an over site from SKY, who would prefer to take your money, and just broadcast a LOGO, to no copyright music., rather than interefere with corporate image, and actually let you see a TV picture!

It obviously is an oversight, Megawatts, because everytime i speak to those at Livingstone, i register my displeasure at the invasion of the dots. I tell them that i have very little interest in the interactive services on offer (save BBCR5 commentary with the football on BBC - but that's now been taken away from us Irish!) so surely there should be an option to switch it off for people like me. They tell me there is absolutely no way that it can be done...except it can.
Pressing the backup button is great, but the little red f**ker appears after an ad break or at the start of the next programme. The best solution is to actually press the red button...no, bear with me, it is! Press the red button, but then - very quickly - press the backup button before the interactive service loads. This will keep it off until you change channels. Ideal if you're recording. Alternatively, as it is loaded with the EPG, tune your most-watched channels into the 'Other Channels' menu, and enjoy red dot-free viewing there.

If only getting rid of the Logos was as easy!

Apparently the red-dot can cause screenburn to TV Tubes, especially the high-brightness ones used in Projection TV's and in the pub-style 3-Gun projection systems. Essentially if you've watched one of these channels for too long you'll see a shadow on the screen of the red dot even when you're watching another channel.
One more reason to hate $ky
