Holden, Coakley and Mooney at Soho, Sunday 3rd August

Congrats to Melodica for putting on the best club nights in Dublin this year. This was James Holden's 2nd visit to Dublin (he having played in Soho with Coakley last June bank holiday). The timing and choice of venue is of particular note. Rather then go for lash-'em-out, once-a-week events, Melodica took their time and ensured that each gig was a quality event. The "underground" location of Soho also helped with the feeling that you were at something out of the ordinary, or maybe once familiar, but you just hadn't felt it for the last few years.

Michael Mooney opened the show. He was followed by Jamie Coakley , once a member of the MASS crew, who's Sunday afternoon show on KISS FM reached cult status a couple of years ago. James Holden is known as a re-mixer of the likes of Sasha and producer of his own tunes on his "Border Community" label.

The tunes being played by all three on the night were deep, melodic, sexy house. The atmosphere was as good if not better then a Bank Holiday Sunday night in PoD with Bubbles. Or maybe a 'Genius' Tuesday night in the Kitchen. If you were there, you'll know what I mean. A mix of music aficionados and serious clubbers, a place where everyone says 'hello' and you shake the DJ's hand at the end of the night.

Another feature of Melodica's events is the insistence that all DJs compliment each other. There are no crashing breaks between one set and another. The night is seamless but always building right through the wee hours. Tracks that brought the house down included -"Hold you" by Dibaba and Nathan & Fake's "Out house" - This is the 2nd release on Holden's label, the first one being "Break for the clouds" by Holden himself

The prequel to this club night was the showcase set played by the three DJs in Purple Moon records the day before. Liberally advertised on the net, this was an opportunity for punters to come along and hear the boys playing playing, whilst also necking a few free beers (Thanks to Greg of Noreast beers for the promotion). Needless to say, Purple Moon records was rammed. Note to other event organisers: For me, this was the second time this year I've heard DJs playing a showcase before the main gig. This is a good idea and should be supported.

Holden finished off the night with Accadia's "Into the dawn". The James Holden mix naturally. So what did I get for my €15? A "club" feeling I haven't had since the turn of the century, a venue open from 10pm-3am, great tunes and a few free beers in a record shop the day before. The scene isn't dead, it's alive and well and called melodica
