Exhausted DJ misses world record target

A hip-hop DJ has failed in his bid to set a world record for the longest continuous DJ marathon.

He gave up after 70 hours of spinning records due to exhaustion, according to staff at the South Wales community centre where the fundraising event was held.

DJ Jaffa, also known as 34-year-old Jason Farrell of Cathays, Cardiff, began his attempt at noon on Friday and was hoping to play for 80 hours to 8pm tonight - shattering the official Guinness world record of 74 hours.

Proceeds, sponsorship and donations collected during the weekend were in aid of Amnesty International.

Simon Matthew, who works at Cathays Community Centre in Cardiff, said: "Just before 10am DJ Jaffa needed to quit, he was exhausted.

"There are mixed feelings at the centre, we wanted him to beat the record but in the end it was a fantastic event which raised money for a good charity.

"We all feel a little deflated but 70 hours is a long time and he did unbelievably well to carry on that long."

Despite DJ Jaffa's failure to smash the world record, it is thought he may have broken the British record for the longest continuos DJ marathon.

He will need to submit evidence of his attempt to officially set the record.

Irish DJs set to spin their way into record books

By Niall Murray
FOUR Irish DJs hope to spin and set records in a charity event with a difference next month.
The plan is to break the world record for the longest playing DJ by playing for 74 hours. The attempt will be made by local radio station hosts at venues in their own cities on May 22.
They will only be allowed a 15-minute break every eight hours if their efforts to gain a place in the Guinness Book of Records are to be successful. “It’s great to be involved in something fun and exciting and have tangible benefits for the charities involved,” said Galway Bay FM’s Jimmy Norman. He will be doing his bit at the Galway Radisson SAS Hotel for Operation Rudolph’s nominated charities, The Chernobyl Children’s Project, the 2003 Special Olympic World Summer Games and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

The other radio stars involved are Catriona Tierney of Limerick Live 95FM (playing at ICON in Limerick), Keith Cunningham from Red FM (at Scott’s bar in Cork) and Jenny Greene from Dublin’s 104FM (venue to be announced). The Tiger Beer longest playing DJ Challenge will not only involve a world record attempt, but will also be a participative social occasion.

Over the three days, the venues plan to host an array of indoor activities from a fashion show to special guest appearances, raffles, spot prizes and auctions. All the events aim to ensure the DJs are continually motivated during the challenge.

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to be part of this truly exciting challenge. 74 hours is a long time and will be a real test on the energy levels but I’m focused and plan to claw my way to the end,” said Keith.

Note: The above posts have been re-edited from the "Whats the world record?" thread in the General Radio section. Makes more sense to keep these seperate methinks
