Are UCB gone from 87.7FM?

Francis Dunne
13th April 2002, 01:48
UCB were not there at the time I done the bandscan. The station has still not returned, however there is a very strong blank carrier where the station used to be and where there was static when I did the bandscan

Following up an unanswered question on the old board, I presume as you can hear NCW on 106 but not on 103 that they are from different sites.

firstly the 103.3 signal is no longer active

secondly sean buckley mentioned on the radio last night that the lady who was hosting their transmitter was threatened with jail by the ODTR so I would assume that they would have to move.

Thanks Francis,

I forgot to ask; why is the Wired FM tx on 106.8MHz marked as testing?

Are they on all the time on that frequency? I seem to recall it was added to serve a hole in 96.8's reception in the Casltetroy area. Someone on the old board mentioned that it seemed stronger than it had when it first came on.

Do you think it is still intended to fill that hole or does it do more now?

J

Francis Dunne
13th April 2002, 23:21
I marked it as testing as that is what the occasional jingles say "this is a test transmission for Wired 106.8

The signal is alot stronger than it used to be but is still not as strong as the Mary Immaculate signal from where I live.

Another possibility is that it could be an opt out service for the University. I seriously doubt that though

Justin Speck

Sorry for yet more questions Francis,

I had assumed that 106.8MHz was in parallel with 96.8 but from what you say, it is not and is putting out test announcements.

Is it only putting out test announcements or is it also putting out normal programme?

NCW has killed off 103.3, and is now on 106.0 only.

The Wired tx on 106.8 has, so far, been running a completely separate output, with a loop containing music and jingles, as well as the "this is a test transmission"

Also, Today FM's 101.8 was showing an RDS of "Radio 1" last week....not for the first time!

Francis,
out of curiousity does Chorus provide FM radio stations on the cable system in Limerick?, maybe you could connect your tuner up to it and make out a list, and then post it here...

now theres an interesting thought

I know that BBC2 3 4 and 5 live are availible on FM here and are crystal clear without connecting anything out in raheen ballinacurra areas of limerick.

I think clasic fm is there too
let me give it a go and see what happens.

For all you bandscan freaks Ive just discovered that NTL in Belfast carry a shipload of radio channes.
Most of the unidentifieds just carry continous music while the ones marked (TV) appear to be soundtracks of music or film TV
channels.
Oh and unlike their Dublin shambles theres practically no leakage ! The network is entirly underground and all TV channels are available in Digital format as are BBC Radios 1-5/Ulster/Scotland/Wales/World Service/Asian Network, Total Rock, UCB, Primetime etc

The music stations are Music Choice channels, as seen on Sky Digital..

>89.7 Classic FM

Surely it would make more sense if NTL put the national stations in their usual sub-bands (i.e. put both Today FM and Classic FM between "100-102"). People would be able to find the stations easier if they contect their tuner up to the cable

BTW are NTL Belfast receiving RTE radio 'off-air' or via Skydigital ?

I was on holiday in Ireland last week. In Dublin at nights I could hear the German external service Radio DW (Deutsche Welle), in German on 101.1 MHz. Any ideas???

NTL bleed Tom. Our top-class cable system leaks like f**k!

Well, you heard a bit more of Spin than you thought you would but what were your impressions of Dublin radio?

Did you tune to the pirates at all?

Thanks for the explanations about the NTL stuff. Was this the cause of Spin on 102.6 as well? Yes, I enjoyed radio in Dublin and County Wicklow, also hearing stuff from Wexford. A trip up to Wicklow Gap also enabled me to hear Galway, Donegal, Sligo and more. I heard many pirates, won't go into them all now, but I will post a list once I've typed everything up. Coming back on the ferry last night, I did enjoy the pirates - XFM, Premier, Hope, Hot 99, Club, Phantom. Earlier, my wife and I were entertained during the car journey, and in the ferry queue, by Walkinstown Local Radio and Radio Dublin - great listening. Many many more pirates and legals were heard; more later....

Does anyone actually listen to that Deutche Welle in Dublin ?

I used to enjoy WRN when I lived in Dublin but could never see the point in the DE relay

tomread
28th July 2002, 21:12
According to the previous guy above, DW, nor BBC WS or BBC R4 are actual intended transmitted relays, just leaks from the NTL cable system. So are these things supposed to be there or not? What coverage do they achieve?

Anorak
29th July 2002, 21:20
I think Mike means cable relays.

Don't listen myself but I'm sure there must be an audience otherwise why would NTL carry it.
Ooops, forgot about CNBC there for a sec!

Hey, I was out all the time - Dublin, Wicklow Mountains etc evenings (after wife & kids had gone to bed) - to do most of the listening. Other times was just what was heard on the off-chance while out and about in the car - notebook to hand of course! But we certainly did get out - Arklow, Wicklow, Courtown, Avoca, Laragh, Claralara, Wicklow Gap, Glendalough, Dublin Phoenix Park, Clogga Bay beach, Silver Strand beach, Brittas Bay. Efficient use of time mate, that's what it's all about. Lots of radio, and lots of "normal" holiday fun too!

87.6MHz. what happened to Hits 88? Is Electric a new station or the old one re-named?

87.6MHz Surprised to see Hope FM here too. Also, assumed it was a religious station. I presume I was wrong!

104.8MHz Shannonside. This is Slieve Aneirin in Co. Leitrim. Supposedly temporary with 250w ERP

Three different stations on 87.6. UCB will be the religious one you refer to, audible over a wide area from South of Dublin (Greystones etc) down to Wexford. Hope was on 91.0 as usual when I heard it in parallel on 87.6. Perhaps this was Electric on 87.6, relaying Hope by way of test transmission. Thanks for identifying the Shannonside Northern Sound site for 104.8.

I can't believe you didn't get Radio Kerry. You'll have to get yourself a better aerial!!!

Seriously, the most comprehensive bandscan I've ever seen.

Hope Radio on 91.0 is a religious station but only runs its religious programming on Sundays. The rest of the week it is non-stop uninterrupted music.

I was disappointed not to get Radio Kerry, and suprised not to get County Sound. There are many more listed that I couldn't hear, but I suspect they are low power small area operations. Don't know whether I should have been able to receive Clare FM or Live 95 (Limerick), but West Dublin Community Radio on 96.0 looks like one that got away.

Thanks above for the comments about 97.8 Swirl / Power. I heard no id, and so the suggestion of Swirl was a bit of a percentage guess. With your additional input, it looks like it must have been Power.

The wife despises DXing in all its forms. I am definitely not allowed to do DXing during the daytime, when I should be doing "family" things (although as you will see from the times above I managed to sneak a few in while she was in a shop or something). So the only time I can really get away with devoting to DXing is late night - after the kids have gone to bed, and indeed usually after the wife has gone to bed (good job she doesn't insist I go to bed with her - ha ha!).

Two of the nights I didn't get back to Clogga Bay until 4am - but I didn't dare appear to be tired during the next day!

Corrin Hill (outside Fermoy Co.Cork) Bandscan:
Friday 9/Aug/2002
(this is the hill with the cross on it next to the main Cork-Dublin road, about 800 ft high on the Cork city side of Fermoy)
Used a Yachtboy 400, sensitivity usually had to be set to 'local' due to overloading!

Pirates (everything that was heard):

At top of Hill:
87.7 Crossrythms satellite relay
98.1 Radio Caroline satellite relay, (low audio unless listening in stereo!)
104.0 Friendly
104.2 RLO (West Limerick transmitter)
105.2 RLO (very difficult to hear due to local RedFM TX on 105.4, had to tune to side 105.15)
106.5 Mix FM (dead air)
106.9 UCB Europe satellite relay
107.4 Freak Fm (currently relaying Total Rock from satellite) extremely weak
107.7 Estuary Radio

Walking down North facing side of hill the following begun to be easily received due to the hill screening of adjacent stations:
87.6 UCB Inspirational (from Co.Limerick)
102.4 Galtee
106.0 Newcastle West FM (i.e. couldn't be heard at hilltop due to RedFM 106.1 from Cork City )

Walking down East Side of Hill
I could with difficulty hear Kiss Wexford 102.0 in places by tuning to 101.95. This station is split between Today on 101.8 and Lyric on 102.2, but the 101.8 (Mullaghanish) is weak on the East facing side of Hill)

local (non pirate) stations:

At Hilltop:
95.4,95.6,95.8,96.1,96.4 Cork 96FM
95.1, 97.5 WLR
96.6 Kilkenny
97.0 Kerry (tuned to 96.95 for best reception due to Tipp FM 97.1)
97.1 Tipp FM
97.3 CKR
102.6,102.9,103.3,103.7 County Sound
104.8 Tipp Midwest
104.5,105.0,105.4,105.7, 106.1 RedFM
107.2 Community Radio Youghal
Limerick's Regional Hospital Radio on 107.2 receiveable there (extremely weak) after Community Radio Youghal's transmitter (also 107.2) goes off for the night at 9PM

On North facing side of Hill:
Live 95 perfect on both 95.0 and 95.3
Clare FM on 96.4 (instead of Cork 96FM), and weakly on 95.9
Galway Bay (weak) on 96.8

Appreciation in bucketloads sent in your direction 021.

Do ou know whether Freak FM are relaying Total Rock 24 hours, 7 per week?

021
18th August 2002, 20:21
Freak seem to be relaying Total Rock most (but not all) of the time recently. I think that their more limited coverage since they came back on the air from their present location discourages too much effort in doing a lot of programming

BTW the bandscan above I was mainly interested in hearing as many pirates as possible. There are a couple more 'legal' stations which I could have heard there as well, for example CUH-FM on 107.8 would be receiveable on the southern face of the hill

Mikeyboy
30th September 2002, 19:40
Radio Free King — Midlands Radio 3 is loud and clear on the car stereo (with RDS), and on your average household Hi-Fi (well, on my Sony anyway, and a small Phillips set).

Mike
1st October 2002, 19:40
Ive also heard Countysound 103.7 in Galway.

Re: sprogs on your radio indicate that it is either
1) Very good (i.e. sensetive enough to pick them up)
2) A piece of crap (The RF stage overloads too easily and the sprogs are actually internally in your radio rather than being radiated by the stations themselves)
3) VERY close to a transmission site

mike you are dead right. did three bandscans last night and because some of the stations did not match up with mikeyboys bandscan. some of which cancelled each other out if you look up

Bandscan 1. tonabrucky

Mikeyboy
2nd October 2002, 09:28
Rob, excuse my language

I said one receiver picked up the energy bleeds, and the other didn't. All of those stations were recorded from the receiver that didn't record pick up the energy bleeds. Get any half-decent receiver, go to Tonabrucky (or even Taylor's Hill, they're fairly level) and you will pick up the stations listed.

And I only referred to RDS on one station (Mid R3) because I was asked about the signal strength.

By the way, what stations were cancelled out??????

ger.c
2nd October 2002, 11:42
Energymix is not bleeding all over the place .(as you say)
did 4 bandscans last night and mon night some of you list is not right . scan 1 from Taylors Hill and Tonabrucky

Mikeyboy
2nd October 2002, 13:40
Ger and Rob, I'd absolutely love to know which on the list 'is not right'. Are you claiming that you could not receive them, or the freq is wrong? If you can't receive them, then your receiver isn't powerful enough. Nothing I can do about that.

I'm dying to see what your 'ex radio tect' (again, your grammar, spelling etc. is appalling — I presume you mean a former radio engineer of some sort) has to say on the matter. In fact, I've gone through the list of legals I received and compared them to broadcast frequencies on their websites, and all are genuine frequencies.

So what's your point, or are you just defending Energy (with whom, I must stress, I have no problem).

Mikeyboy
3rd October 2002, 08:33
What are the stations you claim can't be picked up at Tonabrucky.

PS. Checked this morning and it seems the Energymix signal is very clean again, couldn' find any bleeds.

People, we are calling on you for help again. There's not usually a great response to these requests, which is rather disappointing, but i'll give it another go.

The bandscan page for Dublin is about to be updated. There's been an increase of hobbyist low-power stations over the past few years, so it is next to impossible to be totally accurate with these things, but sure we'll give it a go.

So if you know of any stations on air which rarely get a mention, post it here or PM me, or email me, or drop by and knock on my door - sure, i'll even make you a cup of tea.

I'm also going to attempt something bigger - a nationwide bandscan. That will not be accurate, there's no doubt about that. I might do a seperate legal and pirate one, that way at least one of them will stand the test of time.

So the same applies for the national one, if you know of any stations etc etc.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Kiss FM 105.8
and possibly 106.0 which (sepending on location and conditions) brings in either Newstalk or Mid106

I dont know are Radio Failte still around Ill check during the week (Reception here in the house is pretty awful)
If you want I can do an update for the NTL cable one and AM (which is still an important waveband in the UK as not all services are duplicated on FM)

I know this isn't a proper bandscan but Lush Fm in Carlow don't seem to be on air these days,at least not during the day.The station in Portlaoise on 90.3 are IDing as,wait for it,Lush FM(no connection AFAIK).In mono from just outside the town, they have live progs during the evenings with music(not mixed) at other times.Passion Fm in Kildare must have increased power or moved TX site as they can now be heard close to Drogheda on 107.7!

This evening at 7:30 Waterford/ Kilkenny; 108MHz, 107MHz and 106.8MHz all have seperate masses being broadcast. You can hear 2 at once on 106.9Mhz. 108 MHz is Mass Fm, 107MHz is reported to be Riverside, 106.8MHz is a new one.

Interested to read about the stations in Carolow and Portlaois. Which frequency did the Carlow Lush FM use and how long has it been on air. I haven't heard of much pirate activity in these areas post 1988. Do you know of any other stations that have operated from here?

I remember reading of a station in Longford called LCR on, I think, 106.6 a year or so ago. Is this still broadcasting?

There was also a pirate in Mullingar called Heartbeat FM in the early 90's. The memory is fading, but something tells me that that station was raided. Anyone remember?

The other station that I am interested to know about is a Breffni Radio in Athboy, County Meath. I think is used/uses 98.4 and have seen it listed somewhere. Anybody heard it of late?

Thanks for the recent burst of activity on this thread. The new Dublin bandscan is now on the site (http://www.radiowaves.fm/bandscans/DublinMarch2003.html). As always, if anybody has any additions, updates etc, they are very welcome. With your help it needn't be as long before the next update is in place...

I am now working on a nationwide pirate bandscan, so all details are welcome.

Keep posting, you may think the information you have is pointless sharing, but as part of the bigger picture it could be vital.

Are there any members in Cork, Galway, Ulster, Mayo etc confirm the frequencies and stations that are on there?

The Breffni Radio referred to in an earlier post (Athboy, Co. Meath) does not exist anymore as far as I'm aware. The FM frequency which they used was 98.4MHz, which is now virtually un-useable as this portion of the FM band is now used by Lyric FM. I live about 12 miles from Athboy and have not noted any such station around this part of the FM band in recent times. As soon as I get a chance, I'll provide a bandscan for this part of the country (Oldcastle, Meath).

To answer Scotty's question
Heartbeat in Mullingar were raided the day agter Breffni got hit.
Apparently the operator hadnt matched the SWR properly and there was TVI problems all over town.

A few years later there were occasional relays of Radio Dublin and UCB in Mullingar and some of the more powerful Dublin dance pirates made it into the town as well

24th March 2003, 20:05
Thanks for the information about Heartbeat. I only heard a vague mention of it back in 1990, I think in one of Simon Maher's magazines at the time. Which channel was Heartbeat actually on and when did the raid actually happen?

Also what happened to Radio Nova 88FM in Clogherhead? I remember in August 1995 driving from Cork up to Larne for the ferry back to Scotland and receiving this station for quite a distance on 88, 105.5 and !07.4 Mhz.

Hi John

Pirate and local listing for Limerick is below. I'll suss out a complete listing (inc RTE, etc) later this week.

http://homepage.eircom.net/~liambyrne/radio/2000s_pirates.htm

RLO is back on 90.5, too (just noticed that I'd not updated that).

I'll update you with all the local and national stations later in the week - whether it's due to atmospherics, I'm not sure, but almost every possible frequency of Lyric and Today seem to be coming in at the moment, as well as a number of Red's 104-106 txs.

25th March 2003, 17:41
"RLO is back on 90.5, too"

not very adviseable for them to be doing that, 90.5 being the freq used by 2FM's Clonmel transmitter apart from other reasons. Whats the point?, RLO need 2, not 3 frequencies to cover their area. Surely 104.2 and 105.2 is enough?

On the newspage some days ago it was mentioned that 2FM was coming over RLO on 104.2, obviously 104.2 must be relaying 90.5 for this to have happened.

BTW Liam is this one gone now?:

Yup, UCB is now gone from 87.7 (page updated now)

RLO was gone from 104.2 last week, with 2FM coming in instead. The RDS signal was gone, though, so I'm not sure what the story was. Surely, if it was an RLO rig that was relaying 2FM, the tx would maintain its own RDS signal ?

The main reason RLO seems to be "down there" is to catch listeners between Radio 1 and 2FM, although I don't know many people who would actually alternate between those two!

WCR's 99.9 is also an odd choice, considering that Today FM have a tx coming in (admittedly weakly) on 100.0

The main "clear" frequency for West Limerick, as advertised on the IRTC/BCI website, is 103.0, but unfortunately UCB/Cross Rhythms appeared on that when Country Gold went off the air last year - what a waste!

Wave Radio is not on the air on 87.5MHz FM in the Cavan area. I'm not sure whether Clanrye FM on 101.5MHz near Edentubber in Co. Louth is on the air, as it is undetectable at my location (Oldcastle, Co. Meath) as a result of the various Today FM frequencies around this part of the FM band.

Likewise, I cannot hear Zee 103.5 from Omeath in Co. Louth, as a result of the strong signal from Midlands 103FM.

Misty Mountain Radio on 107.1MHz FM in Cavan is still on the air, featuring continuous country music, with live output on some weekday evenings. A little more transmitter output power could be utilised, as this frequency is relatively clear in a lot of areas close to Co. Cavan. The signal is quite good over a wide area of counties Cavan and Meath and, as far as I'm aware, two FM transmitters are being utilised on the frequency.

Flash, it looks like you were able to receive signals from Brougher Mountain, Divis & Camlough.

The FM frequencies used by the BBC on Brougher are only replicated in the UK by Durris (Aberdeen), and by RTÉ in Limerick.

88.7 - Unknown #1 (playing Sting) - Camlough, BBC Radio 2

89.4 - Unknown #1 - Brougher Mountain BBC Radio 2

90.1 - Unknown #1 - Divis BBC Radio 2

90.9 - Unknown #2 (possibly Lyric) - Camlough BBC Radio 3 (Classical music probably made you guess)

91.6 - Unknown #2 - Brougher Mountain BBC Radio 3

92.3 - Unknown #2 - Divis BBC Radio 3

95.6 - Unknown #5 (UK) - Brougher Mountain BBC Radio 4

96.0 - Unknown - Divis BBC Radio 4

96.5 - Unknown - Considering you've received everything else from Brougher, it might be Downtown Radio from the same site on 96.6

98.3 Unknown (playing Shakira) - Camlough BBC Radio 1

99.0 - Unknown #6 (playing Coldplay) - Brougher Mountain BBC Radio 1

99.7 - Unknown #6 - Divis BBC Radio 1

101.2 - Unknown (playing rock, very strong stereo signal but no RDS appeared) - Most likely Brougher Mountain, O101.2 West (they do have RDS though)

104.6 - Unknown (UK chat) - Camlough, BBC Radio 4

There is a possibilty that where the BBC Stations are marked Camlough, it could be the welsh Blawen Plwyf (sp?) - though I am near certain they don't use 104.6 for anything.

Tom,

The Kiss FM on 104.2 and 107.7 is, I assume, the Dundalk station that we heard previously on 106.0 and 105.8. It has been nomadic of late and also used 103.6 at one stage.

Clanrye FM has been on air for a couple of years and broadcasts to Newry from the South, located near Carrickarnon.

Anyone, are they from the old Boyneside/Sunshine site at the warehouse???

A fair point Mike, but after 20 odd years on the pirate scene both in Ireland and over here I have a fair idea of what one can and cannot write. I have never and will never write anything that could put a station in danger.

Had we been discussing a station in the North of Ireland, Scotland, Wales or England then yes, it would not be wise to mention any details.

However in Ireland the stations have been able to operate more openly to the extent that in some cases they do announce their locations and have fixed landlines.

There are risks, but the stations seem to accept these and continue to operate as normally as possible, especially around the border.

Indeed on this very board I have seen more detailed locations for some stations compared with my posting.

Ultimately if the ODTR decide to act against a station they do not need help from me or anyone else! I can track a station using a simple portable radio, it is not difficult.

Yes, loose lips etc, but let's not blow it out of all proportion!

All I was trying to do was find a contact address to Clanrye for Tom Read.

I heard during the week that RLO's 105.2 site was no longer in the city, which would seem odd if 104.2 is still stronger in Mallow (although why they still have both going is beyond me, since all of RLO's target area is covered by at least 2 txs, if not all 3).

Also heard 'Century' from Sky Digital being relayed from Mitchelstown on 106.4
How come Cork folk get decent stations relayed, while Limerick has to put up with UCB wasting a perfectly good frequency????Come back 103.3 and 106FM - and soon!

Interesting stuff. Can anybody just clarify all the Kiss frequencies and the general area they are located. I take it that 104.2 is the main rig?

Also is Energy 80's the same transmitter that was Magic 90's???

South Derry Guy
18th July 2003, 04:59
Yeah Scotty 104.2 is the main rig for Ulster with the relay from Monaghan going out on 107.3 to the County Armagh area!! Shane P would be the best person to ask all the tecnical stuff from when/if he is on here!! Magic 80,s to be honest have,nt got around to hear it yet!! Is it on 107.6? as magic 90s was!

Justin Speck
19th July 2003, 01:47
Wasn't the Kiss Monaghan relay on 107.7MHz? If it has moved to 107.3, I presume Y FM in Monaghan is no longer on 107.4!

Are Kiss still on 101.6 (Ardaghy) as well?

Shane Pearce
20th July 2003, 01:09
well, there is a TX being used as a relay on 101.2 in omeath. not from Ardaghy, the last station to come from there with a decent signal was Zee 103 (from the 80's, not 6 months ago)

scotty
20th July 2003, 04:25
Shane,

Are you able to list the frequencies and if possible general locations of the rigs. Those that I am aware of are 100.6/101.2/104.2/107.1/107.3. Is that it?

The latter frequency was picked up by a friend of mine in Scotland a few weeks back. Where is 107.3 and what is the power??

FMDX
20th July 2003, 05:36
The last time I heard the 101.2 in question it was ID'ing as Tiocfaídh FM (Thats Chucky for thouse of you in Ulster who abuse this verb, though never understand what it means!!). I also recognised the presenter. Was this a legitamite Hiss opt out or did members of staff take matters into their own hands????

Bandscan done about 10 miles from Cork city
Received on a Grundig YB400 radio. This had a signal strength meter 0-5 and 2 sensitivity settings, DX and LOcal. The radio is not hugely sensitive on MW many/most? car radios do better. Signal strength of some UK national stations unsteady due to beat effect of more than one transmitter present on same channel (especially Virgin)

The weak 102.0 is from Mt Leinster, whilst 102.4 is from near Clonmel for South Tipperary. The edge of Beat's franchise area is not all that far from Limerick city - the Limerick/Tipp border, about 20 miles?

I'll listen in to 107.1 again at the weekend, there was some live programming sunday morning, didn't hang around as I wasn't particularly impressed by the music.
According to Radiowaves database, theres a pirate station in cavan called misty mountains radio on 107.1
106.5 looks like its a local pirate called L.C.R. (longford community radio). Its in the radiowaves database. The presenter on sunday morning certainly sounded like he had something more than sugar on his cornflakes anyway....

Made another trip this morning to Portpatrick on the south west coast of Scotland and heard the following pirates;

101.65 Clanrye FM, County Louth
104.40 Kiss FM, County Louth
105.10 Magic 105, County Monaghan
105.30 Drive 105, County Donegal
105.70 Rythmn FM Dublin
105.80 Magic 105, not in parallel with 105.1!!!
106.60 Energy 106, County Monaghan
107.00 Radio Failte, Belfast
107.30 UNID playing a Country CD non stop at 0945
107.40 Pulse FM, County Louth
107.70 Choce FM, County Monaghan
107.90 UNID playing a CD with non stop Irish songs
108.00 Mass broadcast, speaker mentioned Dundalk and Drogheda

Questions here are;

Anyone got any idea who the Country stations might be. At first I thought 107.9 might be Tyrone Community Radio, but reckon it was too weak and fading for that. The 107.3 station was stronger but did fade.

When did the transmitter appear with Magic 105 programming on 105.8? Where is it serving and why not in parallel??

What has happened to Kiss FM's relay on 107.5?? The carrier may have been on but certainly no audio.

On the legal front, apart from all the usuals I heard Phantom on 92.1 barrling it out with BBC Radio 3, but quite strong at times. Amazingly I also heard Tipp Mid West Radio on 104.8 so band conditions must have been pretty good. That is what makes me think that 107.9 was travelling a fair way.

Any suggestions on the UNID's would be great.

South Derry Guy

Sorry mate, that is a mistype! Should be 104.2. Do you know which frequencies TCR are on these days??

South Derry Guy

TCR 104.2, 107.9 and i think 105.9...

scotty
2nd May 2004, 17:00
So that could well have been them that I heard on 107.9. I wasn't sure as I would have expected them to be stronger due to my close proximity to the North of Ireland.

By the way has anybody else heard the Magic transmission on 105.8??

South Derry Guy
3rd May 2004, 01:25
Re Magic 105 on 105.8 nah have,nt heard this one yet!! Could this be there back up system for when the maintanence work is being carried out on the 105.1 site!! I wonder... Could be a problem with Mid 106 on 106.0fm look what happened to Kiss when they where on 105.8!!!

I assume the station that I heard on 107.3 was the one reported in the news section as being from Ashford. Is that in County Wicklow??

Here's a few stations that Ive heard over the past few days in Balbriggan Co. Dublin, in the absense of the Dublin Pirates.

94.2 Radio Cyrmu, Llandona, (quite strong much of the time.)
94.3 BBC Radio Scotland. (Fades in and out occasionally)
94.5 BBC Radio Ulster, Divis (constant strong signal)
94.8 Northern Sound, Monaghan (its been years since Ive last been able to hear it)
94.8 BBC Radio Wales Llandona (quite strong at times, wiping out all hint of Northern Sound)

Does anyone know the location of the 94.3 Scotland transmitter?

19th July 2004, 23:53
The 94.8 MHz FM transmission from Northern Sound is actually the Cavan transmitter situated on Slieve Gla, while the Monaghan transmitter (on 96.3 MHz FM) for the service is located at Corcaghan in Co. Monaghan. With regard to your query about BBC Radio Scotland on 94.3 MHz FM, I think you'll find by following the link that this transmission is emanating from the Black Hill transmitter.

Think that'll be the RSL station Feile FM running from Belfast. Will be on air from July 12 thru August 8th. Was probably during setup you heard it.

105.1 can be heard quite well in Antrim (the high piched buzz is still there but doesnt seem to be as bad as before) but reception in North Belfast is pretty manky

OTG how strong is BBC Radio 4's 96.0 in Tyrone ?

Reception in Antrim is fairly poor (All other services from Divis are fine)

I know 96.0 is only on half power (Compared to Radios 1 2 3 and Ulster) but the poor reception in Antrim seems to suggest they are using a directional aerial as well although why there is a null in this particular direction is a bit of a mystery.

I could understand them having a null to protect LMFM's 95.8 or maybe some Scottish stuff but they should be able to use full power in other directions ?

I checked it in London during the week and it's virtually nonexistent!
Atlantic we useta get lots of calls out of London back in the day..

Absolutely grand Mike, although it is noticably a tad weaker than the rest of the Divis BBC services (slightly bigger hiss in stereo etc.)

RTE 252 is very good, although the reception doesn't seem to be as strong as in the days of Atlantic. Probably down to processing I guess. Atlantic could be heard on a hi-fi without its AM loop plugged in here!

252 is a damn sight stronger in Belfast than either 198 or (when it was on) 567 !

I know a mic preamplifier in Mayo and a telephone box in Swords that picked up Atlantic

"I know a mic preamplifier in Mayo and a telephone box in Swords that picked up Atlantic" - true Mike, however I have monitored LW 252 Extensively accross both the UK and Ireland and found it to modulate at lower level since March and also it's processing is as dull as a dishcloth.

I think it's time to reflect on how strong it was when on FULL Power in the early 90s and even towards the end of Atlantic 252 in '00 and '01.

Oh dear, how quickly people forget.

Liamo
1st August 2004, 00:03
Never took to Atlantic.....for two reasons.

1) It was kindof weird to have a station based in Ireland that pretended to be from the UK. I know that was it's target market, but even Radio Luxembourg was pretty proud of where it was coming from.

2) The concept of repeating the same songs every hour never appealed to me. For that I buy CDs.

Considering that it's an Irish frequency, I'm pretty glad that it's back in Irish hands, and it also saves me wasting an FM preset for the 1 in a million times that I would hit RTE Radio 1. Current modulation settings are probably due to the fact that it's now primarily a speech frequency, which is what LW is really for, anyway.

And swiftly back on topic before John kills me: aside from the aforementioned 252, Limerick is pretty much unchanged, apart from absolutely chronic overspill from BBC radio on the cable network on 105.7 - 106.3 around the Punch's Cross area.

Had heard a rumour of a Fresh 103 type station coming on over the summer, but nothing's appeared yet (apart from the far-too-brief appearance by Nova)......anyone have any more info ?

On the Button may know more than I do about this, but I think I'm correct in saying that Tom Hand is no longer the engineer in Summerhill. He seemed to take a lot of pride in his work, and the 2 times I saw the 252 TX site it was perfectly maintained - even after TeamTalk had gone off the air.

scotty
1st August 2004, 12:35
Did anyone ever get the cross modulation effect, by that I mean being able to hear 252's output via Radio 1 on 567 khz?. You could hear it clearly in the background during quiet periods.

I wrote to RTE engineering about it but they claimed to know nothing about it!

Mike
1st August 2004, 16:23
Never heard them affecting 567 although in some parts of Ireland 198 was badly affected

it could be caused either by a saturated reciever front end or by ionospheric effects (the so called "Luxembourg effect")

Atlantic 252 DID come in under 567 Khz (mixed though somewhere up the band on MW away from 567 and it was like a 50/50 mix of songs vs speech!

819 ? (567 + 252) but I dont drink
May have been a reciever sprog though

My old Yachtboy used to pick up intermods from 567 and 612 in parts of the midlands but these couldnt be heard on a walkman

Not quite...there's also Passion FM on 105.3, the unid on 105.7, and the newly-added station on 87.6...

I've tried to pick 88.1FM several times over the last week but to no avail and yet it has signal strength of 5/5 ?
Is it just transmitting at weekends/night (i.e. when I'm not in town) or just in a certain part of dublin?

It is on and off, most of this week mainly off but when on it has been a carrier.
The RDS (TEST88 .1) is on and off also...

Usually broadcasts night-time and weekends - but has been known to appear during daylight hours also...

Not 100% sure, just going on the powers that I have listed listed in a booklet. It was issued last year so changes may well have taken place.

ICR Moville may be 50 watts. That was in a letter from them a couple of years ago. 30 watts was in the booklet I have.

I have only noticed Highland on 96.9 in the last few weeks so maybe they have upped the power.

Talking of Highland are you still receiving them on 104.5??? And is 87.9 still on as I have not heard it for a few weeks.

I can normally hear 87.9 at a different location but haven't done so for a while.

ICR is listed as 2kW on 105. The 107.6 outlet is stronger here, but 105 was also bringing in Ocean FM.

96.3 is the most amazing though as there is an ILR around 20 miles from here as the crow flies and it is normally non existant because of Northern Sound. Drive the other side of the hill away from the coast and Q 96 comes in.

A few years back when I had a different car with one of those in built aerials in the back window I used to be able to hear Belfast Community Radio on 96.7 at Dundonald Hill as it was then totally blocking Westsound. The West FM transmitter on 96.7 is around 12 or so miles from me as the crow flies. No sign of Citybeat these days though!

The ICR 107.6 outlet is a relay station intended to serve Moville though I'll agree it gets out a fair distance.

Highland have a transmitter licenced for 96.9 in West Donegal for 100W but it is clear that they must have another one somewhere else as I've heard them on this frequency from Portrush to Bundoran. It has from time to time arised suspicion on these boards. Their 87.9 relay is intended for Malin, I'm sure the hills in Inishowen do a good job of blocking the signal southwards.

Northern Sound on 96.3 is no big surprise. I used to listen to it at night time occasionaly in Belfast on a portable radio!

Some long distance stuff there, however in the house we were renting in Cleggan the only strong stations were the two Connemara Community Radio outlets and Mid west Radio on 97.1. Even Galway Bay FM's Clifden transmitter was weak.

On Saturday July 16th whilst travelling near Enniskillen I noted non stop Country on 105.8, assumed to be Hilltop Radio and on 107.1 that is probably Misty Mountain Radio. Both these County Cavan pirates were quite weak but audible.

OK here you go a rather "quick and dirty" FM bandscan done today in the Abbots Cross/Rathcoole area to the North of Belfast

NOTE: Reception conditions in this area are not ideal due to Carnmoney Hill nearby also there may have been some tropospheric ducting when this was compiled

Here's a list of stations I was able to receive in Blackpool while on holiday last week:

107.9 Dune FM (Southport)
107.3 Abbey FM (Barrow)
107.0 The B (or is that The Bee ?) (Blackburn)
106.2 Real Radio (not sure of location, very weak)
105.6 Three FM (Isle of Mann)
105.4 Century FM (ILR Regional for the NW)
105.1 Galaxy (NE England ?, very weak)
105.0 Three FM (very weak)
104.5 BBC radio Lancashire
104.3 BBC Radio Cymru
104.1 BBC Radio Cumbria
103.9 BBC Radio Lancashire
103.6 BBC Radio 4 (North Wales)
103.4 Marcher FM (Chester fairly weak)
103.1 The Bay (Morecambe)
103.0 Key 103 (Manchester)
102.7 BBC local radio (unidentified very weak)
102.4 Wish FM (Wigan, quite weak)
102.0 Galaxy (Manchester)
Classic FM (various frequencies)
100.4 Smooth FM (ILR regional for the NW)
100.1 Lakeland Radio (the Lake District)
BBC Radio 1 (various frequencies)
97.4 Rock FM (Blackpool)
96.9 The Bay (morecambe)
96.5 Wave 965 (Blackpool)
96.1 BBC Radio Cumbria
95.8 BBC Radio Mersyside
95.5 BBC Radio Lancashire
95.1 BBC Radio Manchester
BBC Radio 4 (various frequencies)
94.2 and 94.8 BBC Radio Wales
91.2 Energy FM (Isle of Mann)
BBC Radio 3 (Various frequencies)
89.0 Manx Radio (Isle of Mann, very weak)
BBC Radio 2 (Various frequencies)

As you can see, quite an exceptional choice compared to some parts of NI.
In addition to the 2 ILR stations in Blackpool (Wave and Rock FM) The Bay on 96.9 was very strong. Abbey, The B, and Key 103 were also of reasonable strength. All three Radio Lancashire frequencies were extremely strong ???? as was BBC Radio Cumbria on 96.1. Again BBC's Radio Merseyside and Radio Manchester were both reasonable.

So, no problems with Ofcom about overspill (read Ofcom's licencing stipulations for some of the local stations in NI) and no stations placed right next to each other e.g. BFBS/Five FM, Seven FM/Radio Failte, BBC Radio Ulster (Carmoney Hill)/RTE Radio 1 (Clermont Carn) etc. etc. as in NI.

By the way, Rock FM didn't play rock music and seemed a bit like the Blackpool equivelent of Cool. Wave was a bit like Citybeat (80's,90's and today) although the latter has a much wider music policy these days (70's through to today) and sounds much better for it, in my opinion !

Well it is mainly because alot of TXs around Dublin are on frequencies near to country mix and since they don't cause any interference it is understandable that many could not be heard in Dublin. Also Energy is now on 107.9.

Hi, Im just curious to know why - or how - Galaxy can broadcast on a frequency so close to 2FM there? - I thought a certain space had to be left to avoid interference?

Or maybe Galaxy is located outside Dublin but you just managed pick it up close to that frequency? Thanks...

that 91.7 is probably a powerful TX in another part of the country so it is OK for Galaxy to use 91.6. 2FM can be picked up better on other frequencies so it is acceptable for Galaxy to use 91.6

Antrim sounds as if it's a nice wee spot radio wise Mike. I always check the bands up there when I'm at one of the homefirst locations (not far from the railway station) on my car radio and I can receive most of what you've listed. 103.3 is definitely Highland by the way.

Have you noticed that Kiss are moving from 101.5 to 103.9 and Wild country from 104.2 to 101.6 (according to their "rolling RDS"). It's supposed to be from this weekend but I've noticed nothing yet. I wonder why ? Maybe it's to make way for a return of Magic (104.2 maybe ?) or possibly they've got wind of the new BFBS frequencies (although I've seen nothing on the BFBS website yet)

Would Wild on 101.6 not cause problems with BFBS in Lurgan? And Kiss on 103.9 will have serious problems with Spin 103.8 unless they have a decent power behind them? What is the story with Storm on 107.7 serious lack of power..

Being fairly high up yet within sight of Lough Neagh helps :)
I am somewhat screened to the East by the mountains so I miss out on Belfast RSL's (small loss in most cases) and Manx (dont think it would make it this far anyway)

Storm sound okayish here as for Magic theyll probably use 105.1 if/when they come back (not a great frequency but all the better ones are probably taken)

BTW Think I missed the Q97/Causeway Coast station on 97.2 (Coleraine) Narrow IF filter comes in handy for that one

You're not missing much Mike, believe me. Most of them are Dire !

Would Wild on 101.6 not cause problems with BFBS in Lurgan?

Have the BFBS frequencies been released yet ? They have been publicising their move to FM on the programmes although I don't think they have a base in Lurgan. You may be thinking of Thiepvale barracks in Lisburn on 100.6 (problems with 5 FM in some areas), in which case 101.6 would be OK. I'd love to know what Palace barracks Holywood will use as it should come in fairly well here (only a few miles across the lough).

I notice 103.9 is now active.

Yeah it was Lisburn I was thinking off mate.. And yeap i got the freq wrong lol.. Must check out 103.9 see if i can get it in this area.. Is 101.6 active yet? They might have problems with an unid Country station that used to be on 101.7 duno if its still there..

Is 101.6 active yet?

Appears to be active but quite weak compared to 104.2. Completely swamped here by Classic FM (Divis). Even my Eton E5 can't resolve it, so it doesn't seem to have been a very good move.

There's also a Today FM transmitter on that frequency (Donegal I think), so there could be problems.

Just did a quick scan tonight (in Antrim) and noticed a few changes

Only FM pirate heard was Clanrye on 103.6

Q102 L/Derry quite strong on 102.9 (although I can never get RDS on this for some reason  ) Q97 also heard on 97.2 although badly squashed between RTE 2FM and Cool FM

Barely auidable speech on 98.1 (presumably 98 Dublin)

Downtowns 103.1 has a wierd breakup/muting on the audio 102.3 is fine

Strong carrier (mono) on 103.3 blocking out Highland ?????

A strange wideband white noise on various parts of the band (turned down the gain on the aerial preamp but it made no difference)

Downtowns 103.1 has a wierd breakup/muting on the audio

Possibly due to Feile FM on 103.2 Mike ?

Feile FM is very strong here in Jordanstown although, a lot of the programmes on it are really awful. It's not worth listening to I'm afraid. Some of it's output over Christmas was really embarrassing.

Feile FM is very strong here in Jordanstown

For a community station in West Belfast to put a very strong signal into Jordanstown is pretty impressive

I wonder how much power they are
1) Licenced for
2) Radiating

Downtowns audio problems seem to be resolved this evening. Also the mystery blank carrier on 103.3 turned out to be Newstalk

In The Netherlands the top end of the FM band is mostly reserved for low power local stations.
The UHF television band in Amsterdam is now entirely digital
There is reportedly a long running pirate station (Radio Patapoe) still active on 88.3 although I didnt hear it.

99.7 = cable leakage indeed

Did you try MW?

RE: Live 95 The 95.0 always had poor coverage to the north (unlike the old Pirate RLO 105.7 TX which got into Mayo at times) 95.3 possibly could make it in to Galway although Im pretty sure the signal was on 95.2

MW is empty during Daylight hours in the West of Ireland although if one can find a low noise location the UK nationals (+Wales/Scotland/NI) can be recieved. On a long wire some UK locals (+ Star Country etc) will come in but its kinda hard setting one up in a car park :nutter:

Anyway heres another one for Castlebar Co Mayo
