Have been meaning to post something like this for a while.. Are light jocks the unsung heroes or just muppets pressing a few buttons???
Also who do you think are the BEST???

Undung heros. Any lightjock that Ive ever come across has been in the particular club for years before you and generally knows the secne an awful lot better than you. He/She knows the nice punters and generally has the respect of everyone from management to floor staff.

Top lightjocks would include:
Sean from Lautrex, Greystones circa 1994=5
Martin Cullen- Hollywood Nights/Deep, now a good DJ too
There used to be a sexy looking girl doing the lights before Martin, but I cant remember her name.
Curly - Earth, Dorgheda
Chalky - Club M

AHHH Chalky , been workin with him for almost 3 years and he makes me laugh and always puts me in a good mood .

Brilliant light jock and probably the best ive worked with ,although he does have a lot to play around with ,but he really knows his music ........Lovely guy and hates Formula 1 racing .....[joke ] .

PS.....Check out Niamh in Club 92 , better to look at than Chalkey , a true babe .

Ok, I dont work with any light jocks, so I cant really comment on this... but just as a matter of interest, with people like the ones above who obviously who have been in the business years, well why dont they just become DJs? Id imagine it would be better paying, and if theyve worked in a club for years and know the music really well, then theyd probably make decent jocks? Im not saying they should have to, or that being a light jock sucks, I just thought it was a natural progression.

Thats like saying the guy who does lighting for television should move onto being a camera man (or a TV star!). I take your point, but its a different discipline. After all, how many radio jocks want to be on televison? (ok, theres loads, but how many radio jocks do WE want to see on TV? Now, that narrowed it down a bit)

why dont they just become DJs?

Because it might be a different story when they pick up a mic, mind you - that hasnt stopped one or two Ive heard :p

Tamangos also have a savage Light Jock that really knows his music - I do think it can really affect how well the night goes (if your good of course!)

Seems like an exciting oul job, without the extra stress the Dj has to deal with, and a great perspective of the club with full view of all the goings on! - Maybe that is one of the many reasons people stick to it rather than doing the gig, each to their own!

Re light jocksMartin Cullen- Hollywood Nights/Deep, now a good DJ too
There used to be a sexy looking girl doing the lights before Martin, but I cant remember her name.

Her name was and is Helen Wickstead..we took her over to Tamango ( never TAMANGOS by the way! ) and she was red hot..lovely lady..lives down in Leitrim now..likes the quiet life..Martin Cullen was always a rock..and a total sweetheart. The original guy in Tamango was a canadian called Colin Russell..driest humour i ever met..guy once asked him if we had any Simple Minds..Colin pointed to the dancefloor and said " take your pick"..good light jocks are worth their weight in gold:)

It's amazing the way things happen sometimes. I hadn't thought about Helen Wickstead in years until the posting the other day here. Then on Tuesday night i was talking to her sister in Tamango and she told me Helen had been involved in a very serious car smash at Kinegad about 2 weeks ago..she is still critical. For those of you who know Helen lets spare a thought and a prayer.
