Just off the phone there with a well known DJ store in Capel street to replace my Shure BG 1.1 which went *boing!* last week (and my backup - a BG 1.0 - is a backup for a reason, its about 7 years old!)

Here's the quotes I got

Shure BG 1.1 - 79 Euros

Shure SM 58 - 189 Euros

Shure SM58s - 320 Euros ( )

I dont mind spending a few quid on a mic Im going to get a few years from but the one I was considering - SM58s (an SM58 with a switch) is taking the p*ss slightly with that tag

Have Shure increased their prices that much in the past year?

Also - anyone else prefer BG's over SM58's? I find them much warmer when it comes to low end frequencies yet 58's are the industry standard. I also like switches on mics, just out of habit

Gigging jocks - what's your mic and why?

I have an SM58. I find it has the warmest, clearest sound. I've tried a few mics and it always comes out on top. Get a pop-shield with it and it will sound great.

I know the "well-known" store you're refering to and I dont really like the place, I dont think they know what they're on about.

Try rigsforgigs, I use them all the time and they're really helpful.

Yeah "that" shop is a joke, quoted me mad prices for other stuff ...
"they" actually didnt even wanna deal wit me at all,
and it was quite obvious the reason was that i was female  assholes! they TOLD me the dex i was lookin at were "out of my range" even tho i hadn't even mentioned a budget!!!! vvankers!

I got my mic through a contact that works in a rather well known legal ummmmmm institution :D
(i'll say no more but its a daymmm fantastic mic ... Electro-Voice PL68 Dynamic Cardioid ... its so good i don't even mind listenin to recordings of my voice!!!!)

Wud definately recommend rigs4gigs tho, really sound ppl and they will order in anythin ya want!!! (dey got my dex shipped in from France :D )
Got a load of gear from dem and they're also great when it comes to servicing stuff!
They're cool too if u give em ur budget, they won't try 2 sell u crap jus cuz they'v nutin in ur range either (which is a major bonus considering how nearly all the shops in town operate!)

I hate dealing with these guys too to be honest Sarah but my first choice (Aquarius) are miles away. Ive decided to order a BG 1.1 off the Capel St shop to get me through the next week or so then I'll be looking at other options and using the BG as the new back up. Its only their location thats making me go there considering how quickly I needed a replacement.

Dont wanna turn this into a bitch thread tho so lets hear *your* favourite DJ equipment shop. Im going to have a look at Rigs4Gigs as an option in future

rigsforgigs are definitely my favourite. It's unusual to find somewhere that are so helpful, and actually want to do you favours to help you out.

I Used to have a beyerdynamic (some w**ker robbed it on me) after that i tried loads of different ones shure akg etc. which were all good but eventually found another beyerdynamic cost me IR£180 but well worth it... i'd feel naked using anything else!!!!

Ive had a 58 for close on 7 years. My second one. If your going to deal with Aquairies, make sure that you deal with Phil. Been the boss, youre not likely to get ripped off. Have you not tried something like ebay or any of the DJ superstores that are in the UK. E190 sounds a bit expensive for a SM58.

Try this guy in the UK. He does the SM58 for £75.00STG plus the delivery charge to Ireland is very reasonable (I think about £10.00STG for a Mic).

The SM58 is definitely the best for DJ's.

Used a Beyerdynamic on loan last night (cheers dude ;)) and was blown away with it's sound. Also used one of the new EV Mics and couldnt believe what I was hearing either - VERY impressive sound for the price (130E plus Vat)

Decisions, decisions

Don't listen to Fox Three ... his voice is so loud he doesn't need a mic

I got an SM58 in Peats wholesaler recently, from what I recall it was only €150 plus vat. I'd definitely recommend it though, they're a great microphone.

Are selling the Shure SM58 for 100.67 euro, I just bought some stuff off them, very friendly!

Theres a little zeck mic floating around for about 70 bucks, very lively mic, Great value for money. Better than the shures.

SM58 are the live microphones, great also that you can drop them and they still work!

Excellent for DJ and vocal work too!

choice of live bands across the country, plus Studio Spares in London sell them at a good price:)

What's with these non branded Shures on sale in well known outlets? Apparently they're the real deal but without that all important "Shure" mark - yet they look, feel and sound like the real thing

ain't got the mark it ain't the real thing, if you were shure would you make a mic and not put your name on it ???? we are ripped off with price of gear in this country, but all that is about to change !!!!!!!!!!

How's it going to change??

I'd say the SM58 is prob the best, it's reliable.

What mic did you go for in the end Kelly?

Boston Barney

EV's are an excellent Mic, have been using them for years now

KJ

Went for the ol' reliable Shure BG - Tried every other option and it still came back to the BG, but maybe thats just me. The EV model is still in mind tho (with the BG as a back-up) as I simply couldnt stop waffling when I picked it up, only downside is there's no switch - something Ive become too used to. The Beyer also had a nice warm sound but found it a bit feedback friendly. The SM58? A really robust, solid build sure - but probably the most over-rated mic in the business IMHO
