as part of the new licencing laws, closing time on a thursday will revert back to 11:30 and no licences will be given so so called super pubs , with a move towards cafe style smaller pubs in mind, it seems we are going backwards again, also a drive to bring down the sale of alcopops is also in the pipeline , with the national id card finally coming to pass

The closing time issue might happen very soon, but the change in licencing legislation referring to 'super pubs' and 'cafe bars' is only in proposal stage at the moment, and might not be submitted for up to 12 months.

Many opposition TDs are questioning these moves, as they don't tackle the issue that's brought on the changes, underage binge drinking leading to public disorder.

The Licenced Vintners Association are partially backing the opposition, as there's a general belief that if more premises are licenced (be they cafes or pubs), then that will only increase access to alcohol.
It will also require radical changes to existing licencing laws and criterea for obtaining a licence for any of the new proposals would be effective.

Personally, I don't believe that changing the licencing laws of pubs, clubs, etc will be effective in what the Justice Minister wants to tackle....underage drinking.
Sure it's difficult enough for many adults to get into certain pubs, let alone under 18s.
What he's not realising is the number of kids hanging around near off-licences and getting over 18s (irresponsible ones at that) to buy the drink for them.

In some respect Max, yes, it is good news for the nations clubs (at least on a Thursday, judging by the proposals), but it will only revert back to the opening hours of old.
Back to square one in my opinion.

For years, there has been many ignored public outcries for our club opening hours to be brough more in line with those of our European cousins.

i totally agree, but the licences are there, a theatre licence is until 4 am and all you need is stage, there are loop holes in the law if only people would exploit them.

Yes, if only. Spirit is your prime example I presume, a good, well run club in my opinion.
Unfortunately, there aren't many promoters and owners who are prepared to pay that bit extra toward meeting the requirements of that sort of licence.
I'm a firm believer that you need to spend money in order to make money, providing that you do it right, but too many promoters are too greedy/tight to go that extra mile.

The Tivoli serve till all hours as well. Its so funny that our FF/PD/SS government are so keen on stopping the youth from turning to drink. Invest a bit of money in the many community projects and clubs that run around the counry and perhaps the kids will have something more useful to do than go knacker drinking in the parks.

(Oh wait - this proposed change to the law will only tackle those underage kids that are drinking in pubs - doesn't impact upon the far more serious problem of knacker drinking at all other than to make it worse. My mistake).

A theatre licence is'nt actually till 4. A theatre licence allows a premises to serve alchohol One hour before the entertainment starts and to continue serving until one hour after the entertainment stops, with no restriction on time. The only places i know that have one are spirit, the tivoli and the viperoom. Im sure there is more though, there definitly should be. I dj in one of the above and we always get the crowds coming in from other clubs that have closed at 2.30, and the atmosphere in the place is brilliant. Late drink should be a thing of the future and not of the past in my opinion. These new laws seem like a bad thing

yeah, but welcome to the new puritan regime in Ireland. No longer do we have the priests telling us whats good for us, now its middle class, middle aged politicians and guards explaining that we'll thank them for controlling our lives someday.

Ah DD thats not fair. I welcome the nanny state holding my hand and looking after me. I don't have a mind of my own and constantly make bad choices. Thank god for the government who have my best interests at heart.

Here's the state of play 2 years from now -

*People pissed off with bar prices

*People have house parties with loadsa drink and food for a third of the price a night out would cost them

*Club/Bar DJ's forced into working in the telesales industry ;)

The price of drink has risen FIVE times (a few cents here, a few cents there) in 11 months, sweet baby jebus!
