Well Last night saw the VIP Opening of the Auld "night Owl's" in Ranelagh under its new name "Il Mondo".

The Venue itself looked very appealing to start, nice music, great sound system and 4 bars! Great you say 4 Bars, no more queuing For hours....Well Your wrong! The average people at each bar was 50-100 at a time and there was only 2 people serving on each bar. The big attraction for the night and i would say the most probable reason for the huge amount of men there was the appearance of Jordan...yes everyones favourite page 3 Barbie Gal! Only one prob... she appeared at 11.30 said hello dublin, then left after someone asking how her baby was(shheesh if i had one question it would not be that one anyway!!)She left.

Then at the end of the night when leaving got a thanks from the bouncers which was nice, but while walking down the road towards Jasons snooker hall saw a fraca involving 3 well known DJ's having a fight with another gang of guys and gals. This disagreement became very messy with one of the guys kicking a girl in the head only for the gardai to look on. Overall the venue looks great, sounds great, but if there is going to be re-enactions of the acts which the previous club was known for, it could get the completly wrong crowd and can only go downhill!

Well worth going to have a look at the venue though!

anyone else there last night got an opinion?

well I hadn't been there before it had been done up so i can't make comparisons.
They had a selection of jocks on, one of them was playing whitney houston and the proclaimers - this at a opening night of what's meant to be a "cool" new club

The queue at the bar was a pain in the ass, the bars are too small for a venue of its size.

good big dance floor, that doesn't stare at you when it's empty , if you know what i mean!
I don't know if it's the colours it's done up in ,or just the elaborate detailing on the ceilings but the ceilings seemed a bit claustrophobicilly ( sorry i have no idea how to spell that!) low and i'm only just over 5 foot!

when i came out of the club I was clamped - now I know that's totally my own fault - but it was just the icing on the cake of a not very good night

But in saying all that - i'll probably go back to give it another go!

Problem with most opening nights is , it's full of D list celebs who probably wont return and go just for a bit of press attention .
First of all , if the club is to be successful , it has to create it's own image and employ the proper people to run it .
A lot of clubs have opened in the last 15 years with the best of intentions but fail simply because their marketing is all wrong and they target a clientel who wont become regulars .
I agree with Princess to a certain degree regarding the music , but what you have to understand Princess , they are playing to people who are not there to Club , there there because they got free invitations and they make the place look cool .
To hell with cool , most clubbers go out at the weekend to hear their fav tunes , not to pretend their important in any way or feel they've climbed the social ladder .
Dont blame the DJ for last nights music , blame the people who told him what to play just so as nobody from Irelands pathetic celebrity scene wouldn't take offence .............

Good luck to the new club IL Mondo , every success .

Just my view thats all ....

Absolutely spot on Ian.
I've seen many a club flyer or concession from shortly after an opening night with mugshots of Jordan or some ex soap star having a brew at the clubs bar!
The 'celebrity punters' thing doesn't work. It would be different in America, where celebrities are adored, but this is Ireland, nation of begrudgers. The vast majority of our population look at a celebrity and think "look at that tosser!"

There are many golden rules to running any business, and in my book, where many clubs fall short is the basic principle of identifying "who is your customer and what do they want?"
Many clubs like to dictate the type of client and atmosphere they desire. There's very little searching for, and actually listening to, feedback from clients these days.

Hey, we're all D list celebs...hope the crew that got into a mill up wasn't the crew that I was hanging around with that night (hi all). Didn't think the place was bad at all, both jocks were pretty good (commercial club after all), but holy jaysus was the bar under-staffed, or WHAT?!!

Personally, I ran to the bar when I heard Jordan being introduced ... I think shes a dumb slapper. I was still at the bar twenty minutes later. There didn't seem to be a huge run up to the dance floor to have a look at the guest celeb.

The bar was so busy that friends of mine I had arrived with went looking for me ... I was gone so long they presumed I had met a nasty fate (which I had ... having to pay for the drink).

Wonder how the place will do generally? They'll have some stiff competition from a lot of the venues in Rathmines which is also a far younger area. There must be a whole moxy load of new places opened up in the last 4/5 years since Nightowls closed down.

The student population of Rathmines probably also have more money now than they did 4/5 years ago, so they may be more likely to brave the city centre.

I know that the club is only open Fri/Sat so perhaps they are trying to get an older crowd in ... is there a big after work drinking thing that goes on in Ranelagh (say the way it does around Baggot St/Merrion)? Perhaps they'll make their wedge that way.

Either way, I wish them the best...may they provide employment to jocks, and alcohol to punters for many more years to come.
