Play what you'd like to hear if you were at at gig like that. They all get really drunk anyway and will dance to anything towards the end. Although not to put you off those types gigs, after doing a couple you won't care what you play you will just want your money and get out as quickly as you can they will drive you insane!!!!!!

The key to 21sts, weddings and that, is playing the tunes that appeal to the women at the party. Handbaggy stuff goes down well, Abba, Beatles Medley, "Walkin On Sunshine", "Timewarp", "Rock The Boat", etc...
Remember that there'll be a wide age bracket there, so you'll need to keep Great Aunt Betty entertained as much as younger folk.
For the finale, you can't go wrong with Sinatra's "New York New York". Aunts and uncles just love that whole 'let's form a ring of people around the dancefloor' thing.

Try going to some venue's in town which play (some of) the same sort of music you'd hear at a 21st. TramCo springs to mind, as does The Picturehouse (on a busy night, sat maybe), and to some extent Q Bar. Listen to the oldies sets they play - thats the stuff you want. As vinylpusher mentioned, the key to these things is keeping the girls happy. Forget about the guys. Do not go NEAR dance music unless specifically asked for by the birthday boy/girl, and even then, try to limit it as much as possible. It's an unfortunate fact that even if you have a full dancefloor, you still have to keep the old people happy. Some of them may have sons&daughters who are nearing 21, so you may well get another gig out of it.

Thanks Turiel, ill ltake a trip into a few of those places you mentioned and see what they are playing and then ill start looking for the gigs. I have all my equipment and all that so im almost there, and ill just get a few extra CD's then to have a bit more of a variety Is there anywhere that ya could get all the oldies stuff or can ya get them i most places like HMV and all that?

To be honest, your only realistic option for getting all those oldies (without spending upwards of €1000 on 60s70s80s collections) is to copy them off other DJs or download them on the web.
One cd I definitely recommend, which you might be able to get in Abbey Discs is the Party Animal triple CD - you'll find a use for almost every track on that. Most collections are a waste of money - remember those '80s Collection' ads on TV for about 8 cds? I've used maybe 3-5 tracks off them, and never reguarly. You'll end up buying albums of maybe 40 tracks just to get the 1 in particular you want.

My Brother-In-Law isn't a DJ, but he likes oldies, so he goes to http://www.timelife.com
They sell all kinds of collections there...60's, 70's, 80's, they have a singers and songwrites collection, just tons of stuff.
They have complete track listings of what's on the CD's.
He goes in and looks at the track listings and then goes to WinMx and downloads what he wants from there.
That way you don't have to spend a ton of money, but you can still have an idea of what's on the CD's.

yeah, i have that one and also i think some of the ones on the school disco cd's too, they all have songs from the 80's, it wouldnt bother me how much i was goin to spend on cds cos i would earn most of it back anyway.
Thanks anyway, you have been a good help, ill hopefully get my first gig soon and ill let ya know how it goes.
