Re: the traditional stuff - it can get very messy indeed as your crowd are f*cked drunk
Its my least favourite gig of the year by far cos people just havent the energy or inclination to boogie woogie
Your thoughts bar/club jocks?

Well Kelly , thankfully i wont be playing any irish rubbish , and certainly not ''The fields of Athenry '' , [wots the bets some w**ker either tonight or on Monday thinks it's cool to have the stupidity to ask for it ] ...........but hey , if it works for your crowd dude , im sure youll put a smile on their faces .....if their still sober .
Ah no - wont be touching the traditional stuff with a barge pole, just thought Id comment on the messiness it usually evokes.
Anyone want my Paddy's night gig? ;)

Ah whats wrong with you Ian, ya leather clad West Brit!?!!
Seriously, I always try to be patriotic but find it hard to be when I see the rest of the so called patriots in our little banana republic.
DD
p.s...oh yeah, if you wear a Celtic top to the parade you do not deserve to have the right to vote. I sincerely mean that. Same goes for the brainless morons that try to sing the national anthem while skulling back the last pint in their local hell hole pub. Same goes for those good patriots who can't tell you who the Taoiseach is, yet get all teary eyed and romantic for the old land the moment they step onto the tarmac of any other country (even if they are on holiday)!.

Maybe i'll paint the house Red , White and Blue , just to piss the neighbours off ...........erm......ok maybe not .
Proud to say i have never sang the national anthem in my life ....

14th March 2003, 20:32
You'd be a brave man to run up the Union Jack in Tallaght Ian!
DD
p.s..I have nothing against the anthem, just resent people abusing it and treating it like a Kylie sing-a-long at the end of the night while they shout and roar and get their most bone headed prejudices off their chests.

Its weird, there seems to be no Paddys Day/Weekend buzz about the city this year. My St. Patricks set actually cleared the floor on Thursday night. And these were students! They usually got mad for things like irish rover. And it wasn't like they werent drunk enough, they'd been in there since like 8pm and I did it at 2am.

Its an r&b vibe these days Turiel , cant figure it out dude , it seems most mainstream venues are full of narrowminded wa*kers who want to hear the same shite over and over again .
Maybe thursday was a bit early , wait 'till you hear them tomorrow night [ sunday ] every pub provo will be on your case to play the usual irish crap and pretend to be paitriotic and think it's cool to be a drunken pri*k and presume everybody feels the same .
Me ?? im getting an England jersey with ''Terry Butcher '' on the back just to piss them off ...Ok , im jokin ,but it would interesting to see the reaction of a certain selection of your typical Irish wanker who rants on about ''The Brits '' but has never even been to Belfast or knows the political history of Ireland .........
Enjoy your St Paddies weekend ...or should i say ....The national vomiting championships ............

Little bit of politics there, little bit of politics there as the legendary smug git Ben Elton once said.
Haven't noticed too much of a vibe in town this year, was coming out of the Tivoli last night and the taxi driver said that their side of things was very quiet as well.
Nevermind! Its Paddys eve tonight, I'm sure we'll see more drunken buffoonery in the name of Ireland.

One idiot came up to me recently and asked me for a song. I told him I'd play it (and I was actually gonna do it) until he started pestering me for it. I patiently explained that I would play it, but I couldn't play it 20 seconds after he wanted it. The idiot then does the trick only the really dumb ass punters do of staying outside the DJ box staring at me. Of course, all DJs know how to avoid the punters eyes and gaze off into middle distance. This lasted a few minutes until he spoke the words all DJs love to hear .... "I'm a DJ too".
WELL!!!
Once I heard that I explained "well, seeing that you're a DJ too you'll understand how much I hate f~king assholes coming up here and annoying the sh1t out of me for songs that I'm gonna play anyway. Because you're a DJ you'll also realise that standing beside the DJ box with a gormless expression on your face will not make me more eager to play your song - in fact it just p1sses me off and makes me determined that you will not hear your request this evening".
He stared at me and walked off. I eventually played his song ... but just to really get at him (and because I was doing a bunch of oldies and it wasn't worth playing the whole thing!) I chopped it about 2/3rds of the way through. Yeah, its the little things in life that keep me happy.

Heres a good list for Paddys day
Brush Sheilds - Fields of Athenry & Dirty old Town
Pogues & Dubliners - Irish Rover
Goats don`t Shave - Hills of Donegal
Wildswans - Dancing at the crossroads
Saw Doctors - I used to love her & N 17
Wolfe Tones -On the One Road & Some say the devil is dead
Conquers - Seven Drunken nights
Andrew Strong - Irelands Call
Thin Lizzy - Boys are back in town
Most venues won`t let you play to much because people have been out drinking all day at it gets messy.

Think I'll stay at home for National Fight Day - really don't think I could bear to listen to The Tones, Aslan, George Murphy, Saw Doctors - what a heap of shite (personal opinion).
Oh yeah are the pubs staying closed until 6.00pm? No, I thought not.

No ballads either. If people want them, they can head off to the 10000000 sessions on around the place, that or listen to them at home :)
On a seperate note, am I alone in refusing to play "The Fields of Athenry"?

St Patricks day is just another normal day for me , i dont do the whole green irish crap . Leyland is spot on , let the RA heads go to their scummy local if they want to pay homage to wankers like Bobby Sands and the rest of his skinny mates . Ok im sure there are ballads which dont include references to killing our neighbours across the water but christ how anybody can remotely find them entertaining is beyond me .
As for that Athenry filth , let the scum who usually visit the home of a well known Scottish football team , who incidentaly are ''SCOTTISH '' not Irish , blast it out along with their other secterian bo***cks, chant it to their hearts content but leave the city the way you found it .

I'm certainly not a RA Head as you call it Iano.In fact I have no real political Views at all but calling Bobby Sands a Wanker is a bit much...I find it very hard to admire any Terrorist but I would have a lot of respect for Bobby Sands.

So we're giving in, then ? We're not allowed play "The Fields of Athenry" (a major favourite at Munster and Irish Rugby matches) because some psycho scum will hijack it, add a few pathetic deluded chants and pretend to their narrow mind we all support terrorists and criminals ?
If we give in and go down that road, next thing you know we'll stop flying our flag because their mates use it in their logo and the Dublin scum wore it while rioting. Come off it, guys! Where's the self-respect and pride of the real people in this country? Let's not give in to these losers!
I'll play "The Fields of Athenry" (particularly with the match on Saturday too), but I'll pull the plug on it if anyone starts ruining it with the chants; it's particularly effective when the psycho realises that he's on his own with no music and everyone realises that he's the reason it's been cut off mid-stream while they were enjoying it.
Aside from that, Groossburger's list is pretty good, Pat Shortt's track is on a roll at the mo ;) , and a few more such as "star of the county down" will do the trick, although some might be more suited to a pub rock band than a disco.

Regardless of wether you like the Irish stuff or night i personally dont think thats relevant. If your booked to play your particular style of music - eg. Frank Jezz etc then do your thing... If like me your booked to keep the crowd happy - then play whatever is appropriate to keep the majority of the crowd happy. Whats the point in having an ego about this?

My mate's brother in law once though that this was written about Thatcher privatising and taxing the water companies in the UK, I kid you not!
So what did I play this year? Same shite as every other gig, thats what, then the last few minutes was Dearg Doon, Saw Doctors, Van Morrison and Sham Rock. As Rob says, no point in straying off the beaten track too much for the sake of a calender dates.
So does anybodny know any Easter songs for the next few weeks? :)
