This never got going unfortunately.
Lets give it a go again.
We're on C
The obvious one is Century Radio. Anyone any comments or memories about the ill-fated station. I seem to remember it was on MW too, so why haven't Today FM got a MW frequency. DId they decide not to take that option?

Aaahh, Century... "I can see the seagulls wheeling over Christchurch Cathedral from the studio"... pity he was in London recording the show, wasn't it?
Winning tickets to an American Football college game at Lansdowne, courtesy of the brekkie show (Marty Whelan?).
The tearful Lois Mahaffy (correct?) on the six o'clock news as she read out the closure statement...:(

Lois Mahaffy has been lecturing in the Senior College in Ballyfermot for the last 10 years....together with one or two other well known radio voices from the past!

There were also quite a few Centre Radios.
I remember the day Century closed. It was a sad day. We did'nt know then what we know now, but it seemed that RTE had a stranglehold.

I heard some recordings of Country Gold, good service but strange name for a station that did'nt play that much country. Maybe that's were Dublin's Country got the idea :D
Are they still on down there?
Btw I think this thread was mant for memories of stations rather than just name them

Country Gold are no longer on air but I think that NCW 106 is the "son of Country Gold" given that most of the people there are from country gold.

How about Club FM? Arguably the most popular dance station in Dublin ever

Yeah - Keith York, Jon Richards (both moved to County Sound Galway, ran by Benin Tierney), Steve Marshall, Don Allen etc. This was WLS FM risin from the ashes. Maybe some more of these guys moved to County Sound also.
Say what you like about Club FM (and I know I'm gonna p*ss off some people I respect on this board), but it was very popular in its day. Unprofessional a lot of the time yes, but spot on when it came to the tunes that counted. Again, sorry to any who are offended at the mere mention of Club (some speak of it like blasphemy) but it had an *incredible* (most popular hard dance station ever in Dublin?) amount of listeners at its zenith.

I have to agree with KJ. Club may not have been professional but it sure was popular.

For those of you with longer memories there was Radio Condor broadcasting on 6243/11463KHz on shortwave. Late seventies out of Raheny and fairly well known internationally at the time.

The station was the follow on from Radio Seagull on 263MW a weekender from the halcyon days of AM!

I can remember glen Kellys rant on air once about how he was bigger than Nova!!! I also remember the Urban FM pisstakes of "Mojo Radio" as "ho-ho radio", and Gary with his mates ringing up poor unfortunate ClubFM jocks and putting them to air on Urban FM while verbally abusing them!!!

Club FM may have had huge listenership but they also had some of the worst DJ's ive ever heard ,almost up there with the best Hot FM had to offer.
Iagree with Kelly Jones refering to it as Knacker radio at it's peak.
Thank god it's not as popular as it was because it was soooooooo
unprofessional and painful to listen to .

Club FM were never as bad as Hot are. Never. Wasnt Tracy Lee, Steve K and Steven Cooper all on Club FM? And they went onto legals. Club FM at their peak probably had twice the listernership of Pulse 103 at their peak so what does that tell you?

Club FM had twice the listenership of Pulse FM? What is this? Opposites day? Club FM and later on most of the stations that its owner (mis)managed were largely responsible for ensuring that dance music would never be treated very seriously in this town.
The crap dance venues they ran, the way they ran them all made sure that most clubbers ran a mile from those gigs even though they might have liked the music. Its only now that we're seeing places like Spirit attract a FRIENDLY dance crowd in a large venue. Good music, good club, friendly people, no fly by nights. club FM and its owner ultimately did more harm to the dance scene than good.

Castle Radio ("The great 828") Broadcast from Beleek Castle in Ballina. I was kinda young at the time but I think it may have been a breakaway splinter from ARW (which seemed to be popular but didnt surive the split) Castle itself only survived about a year but 828/362 seemed to be a popular prate frequency in the early 1980's
I think there was a Castlebar Community Radio as well
Radio Carousel
CBC in Clonmel
Radio Caroline (various in Dublin and Cork)
Countysound Galway
Cavan Comm R ?
and a host of "Community Radio XXXXXX" type stations
Im suprised there wasnt more "C" stations given that it would have been possible to recycle some Canadian jingles (just as there was a load of "K" and "W" stations
