Is it illegal for BCI licensed stations to use srolling RDS.

I have a felling.

If so perhaps MWR will register a breach with the BCI, they are currently displaying a happy christmas message on the 96.1 freq.

South East Radio (the first BCI station to use RDS) did that about 6 years ago.
They were told in a written warning from the then IRTC to stop!

I really don't see what right the BCI have to tell people that they can't stroll text on their RDS.
What is the thinking behind it ?
RDS looks godd if your Station Ident is 98FM,REDFM,96FM or FM104 but if your Station is South East Radio, East Coast Radio or Tipperary Mid West Radio.

Its silly really that South East Radio and the likes can't stroll their name across RDS.

God knows we spend enough money branding a Station and our Station name should not to be cut down to fit on the RDS screen.

Scrolling text is illegal because
1) Its distracting to drivers
2) Because of the way the RDS is transmitted If theres the slightest hint of multipath the signal gets all corrupted.

If you tune into Magic105 or Energy 106 and watch your display throw up such nonsense as 0VD'SDE3Y- youll see what I mean

one of the scummiest things I've seen all year was some pirate station from the north trying to flog alloys via RDS. Why not just call it "boy racer fm". Yeuch!

FYI the Northern equivalent of a "Skanger" is a "Spide"

Thanks mike, but living in Dublin I can tell you theres enough to be doing in dealing with our own scumbags without trying to communicate with their northern equivalent.

The station you are referring to is storm106.2 and the company is dundalk alloys newry rd.dundalk and storm is a great station which caters for the north east youth market and not just boy racers

Thats right, it was Storm FM. I caught them while having a pint in the Blue Light last week. And I don't care how good you think they are Pulsar, I thought the "Alloys for Sale" RDS was just one step above them calling to my door trying to sell me cheap carpets.

Scrolling RDS isn't 'illegal', it's against guidelines. Those are rules set out as recommendation by the ITU who set standards for european broadcasters.
Many countries in Europe ignore this - go to Spain, Italy etc and rejoice in the scrolling RDS that's prevaillent there.

And it's ridiculous to say it's distracting to drivers when it's European policy to encourage Enhanced RDS, which has as one of it's main features scrolling traffic announcements (on a bigger screen than at present).
Also, what about navigation displays, and those silly moving graphics you get on Boy Racer stereo systems - aren't they distracting?

The data corruption thing happens far less - if at all - if the RDS sub carrier level is set correctly. Too high or too low and there will be corruption when poor signal or multipath occurs.

Yes but with "Enhanced RDS" one doesnt get scrolling tect unless they specifically enable that function.

Anyway what they do in other countries is pretty acedemic. In many countries they stone women suspected of adultry to death. That isint an argument for allowing people to do the same here

And yet again we have somebody (obviously from Dublin) who thinks "The North" starts at the airport. Go get a life and buy a Geography book please !!!!

Again is it not the case of the BCI being anti-anything-new..... so typical :(

I've oft said that the BCI's motto could be "The answer is NO - now what's the question?" !!

RDS has other uses that the BCXI have prohibited - paging services and Differential GPS for example.

But they might earn the station money, and we couldn't have that, could we?
