Abba's Dancing Queen has been named the greatest ever dance floor filler.

The Swedish superstars narrowly beat Kylie Minogue, whose Can't Get You Out Of My Head was runner-up in the poll for music TV channel VH1.

Number three in the chart of tunes which get everyone on their feet was I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor.

Dancing Queen topped the charts in 1976 when disco was in full swing and ruled the airwaves.

The band's Benny Andersson said of the result: "It's rather fantastic that our music is still around and that they didn't kill us for being so corny at the time."

More than 400,000 votes were cast to find the 100 greatest dance floor-fillers and the songs will be counted down from December 16-20. The full list will be broadcast on December 21.

Madonna and Michael Jackson are the acts with most tracks in the chart with three apiece.

The queen of pop is at five with Holiday, 23 with Vogue and 57 with Into the Groove.

Jackson is at eight with Billie Jean, 27 with Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and 39 with Blame It On The Boogie, a track he recorded with the rest of his Jackson brothers.

The top 10 are;
1. Abba - Dancing Queen;
2. Kylie - Can't Get You Out Of My Head;
3. Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive;
4. Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen;
5. Madonna - Holiday;
6. Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart;
7. S Club 7 - Don't Stop Movin';
8. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean;
9. Robbie Williams - Rock DJ;
10. Village People - YMCA.

So am I the only one then who has never played Dancing Queen?

Very surprised kylie made it so high... yes, at its peak, it was the biggest floor filler around, but surely its died down now? I expected billie jean to be much higher - it always does the biz for me. Groove is in the heart... yes, a floor filler, but not a huge one?
Rock DJ managed to clear the floor for me last Friday.

Although I havent played in a long time "Dancing Queen", love it or hate it - if you play it and it doesnt fill the floor at an oldies gig/21st/Wedding etc - you may as well pack up your gear and go home

My 2 euro cents ........

Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive;
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen
YMCA

Nope, all are horrible, never play them (never asked to!)

S Club 7 - Still has huge dancefloor appeal considering its over a year old

Kylie - ditto : once that bassline kicks in the place still goes crazy

Billie Jean : A classic that I somehow never grow tired off despite playing it (or a remix) at nearly every gig

Dee Lite - An overplayed 90's tune that works 70% of the time

"Holiday" - Dont know how this made the top ten. A decent Oldies granted, but not a dancefloor classic by any means

And finally ....... "Rock DJ"

There was a time at this tune's peak where you could have played it 4 times a night a got away with it but its definitely no floor filler now

I think we can safely say "cant get you out of my head" and "dont stop movin" would get nowhere near there in a realistic top ten!! billie jean has to be my no.1, although you can never go wrong with any of mj's upbeat tracks. Probably not worthy of an alltime top ten, california love & no diggity always pack the floor in the clubs i play.

Someone did Ian, the version currently going around is Fatboy Slim's take on it (although some stations are ignoring the new remix and playing the original). I *love* Norman's stuff usually but this mix didnt improve an already amazing tune

Re: No Diggity, yup gotta agree Squire - when was the last time a gigging jock *didnt* play this at a gig? ;) A floor filler every single time

I think certain songs are a bit like TV shows . In 10 years we'll still be laughing at Father Ted and Fawlty Towers and still dancing to classics like the above mentioned tracks .
Theres an old saying ''People dont know what they want , they want what they know '' .
Shame really ...........

well fromthe wedding side of things i play it almost every week, but a strange thing has been happening lately, a lot of brides sayin they hate abba and only play dancing queen as its abba's only good tune......

agree with gloria gaynor,

i'd stick in wison pickett- land of a 1000 dances in there from a personal point of view....just wondering its a big lump of cheese and would only be played in certain venues but the proclaimes is still doing the business each week.......

i play cheese.......nuff said !!!

Thankfully 104's chart should have an Irish slant and "500 Miles" will end up top of the pile Id say. Thats an interesting note about younger brides not liking Abba that much Mark - maybe they have horrible flashbacks of their Mam's drunken kareoke renditions and are mentall scared for life :eek:

From your wedding point of view what would be your top ten Mark? Am curious

at the mo with the age group that is gettin married i'd say.....in no real order

well......

duran duran....rio/hungry like the wolf
simple minds....alive and kickin/don't you forget about me
pixies....debaser
rolling stones......start me up
gypsy kings.....anything by them
proclaimers...500 miles
madness...baggy trousers
bee gees...stayin alive
michael jackson....billie jean
foundations...build me up buttercup

but then on the other side you get slightly off par requests such as

deep purple
black sabbath (spelled very wrong)

these days the dj will sit down with the bride and groom and go through the music they would liked played.....suggestions from both sides normally come up with a good playlist, after all they know the music tastes of the guests and it means your taking no chances on will this work/not work......

people will say ah you not a dj your just playing what you r told, but how many jocks go into a venue and the manager says, i want this type of music in this venue......

If i played SClub 7 or Rock DJ on a Saturday i'd be hung but any other night i'd get away with them..if i wanted to play them..which i dont:)
my Top 10 ALLTIME Floorfillers?
1.I Want You Back-Jackson 5
2.Dancing Queen-Abba
3.Night Fever-Bee Gees
4.Billie Jean-Michael Jackson
5.Like A Prayer-Madona
6.Boogie Wonderland-Earth Wind And Fire
7.Disco Inferno-Trammps
8.I Will Survive-Gloria Gaynor
9.It's Raining Men-Weather Girls
10.Your The First Etc-Barry White
also worth a play-Kelly Marie-Feels Like I'm In Love
Gloria-Laura Branigan
Flashdance-Irene Cara and Billy Oceans Love Really Hurts Without You. I can always rely on Madonna's True Blue and Diana Ross's Chain Reaction to hold the floor if not fill it but the biggest change is the fact that with the possible exception of a small handful of songs the 60's are floor clearers as are most of the big hits from the 1980's.More Cheese i say!!

I have to admit when I was doing 21st s I alawys used wham to kick the night off.

At weddings it was alwys dancing queem and then waterloo near the end of the night. Thats if I came on after a band.

The temptations - build me up buttercup never really fails

I have to say at mobile gigs I will survive can have grenade affect on the dance floor sometimes.

Barry White your my first my last, Billy Ocean love really hurts and anything by the jacksons is usally a safe bet.

Gotta admit , I learned my trade as a wedding jock , banging out the party tunes - the same old " top 50" as listed.

Gave it up years ago as there is only so much a man can take, but having said that I was cleaning up , great bucks.

Years later I only do house nights around the country, do well on those but I dont think I would know how to do a wedding today?

Respect to the wedding bangers who play out every week , they can be the hardest gigs to do with the wrong crowd.

I suppose a lot of us older [now i said it ] dj's would have started out doing the wedding /21st party circut and loved it because it was a gig, and we were dj's thinking ''Im getting some attention here '' ,and will i get loads of girls ?? I know i did .
Back then it was fun because the music played was expected and there werent as many different styles . You just got on with playing the charts and the old floor fillers and everybody just had fun .

Jesus , i dont think i would be able to do one now because of the many bad habits i have picked up over the years .

So YES , agree with Rickker ,respect to the guys and girls who can do them , and have the patience to deal with a drunk 75 year old . Thats what i call , earning your nights money .

Weddings/21sts are the best training ground for any jock and everyone should do them for at least a few months when they're starting out to better understand how to keep a floor I think.

Top Ten is on FM104 today, if anyone's listening in list them here - think I'll have me a lie in ;)

wedding & 21st are very different i think, the wedding scene had evolved in the last 10 years i.....couples know their music more and and more picky about what is played and the package is a lot more porfessional, example i wear black tie to a black tie wedding and encourage couples to come up with play lists

most of all its the most importnat public dsay of a lot of couples lifes and dj must understand that.......

a 21 st is a different kettle of fish, at this stage its 1hr of background music until food is served and then, 21kisses and happy birthday and then 2 hrs of r n b/ chart rubbish and 30 mins of token oldies for the parents etc.....big difference

but both take a lot of patience.....

Iano, i've had my fair share of drunk grannies complaining that the music is too loud, even though i haven't started yet and am only queing up the first dance in my headphones !!!!
