I've been listening to Chris Moyles a lot over the last few weeks. It struck me that his links are LONG, very very long. So in my infinite anorak wisdom I decided to time a few yesterday and today. SEVEN minutes, seven full minutes!!More than 3 of the links I timed were that long! Thats over 1 tenth of your hour(excluding news, no ads obviously on radio 1) in just one link!! Thats a bit mental?? Just wondering do you think its a good or bad thing? I think most PDs in Ireland would have you shot if you linked for that long once, let alone on a regular basis? Certainly makes a mockery of all the "30 second link" advice many people often give and get on boards such as this? Personally I think it works for moyles, you would never guess listening in that he was actually talking for that long, but he is. its very like listening to the lads down the pub or something
Opinions?

It's ok once it's entertaining and funny .I remember Kenny Everett on Radio 1 breakfast doing the same , he kept me glued to the radio and i didn't want him to stop .
Sometimes Moyles can get a bit carried away , but it's better than some of the Shite we have to listen to here .........

Im a big fan of Moyles and you're right - most of his links last up to 10 minutes but it works. He has full reign of his show and it works well, the thing about moyles is the fact he is a funny character and will talk about what he watched on tv last night or how much he drank - its just like listening to your friends conversation. He's not pushing a promotion down your throat or reading liners and this is obvious as a listener, you're listening because you want to listen,
When im listening to Moyles i find myself turning up the radio when his links begin as opposed to turning up the songs on other stations.
I think this sort of radio would work in Ireland if stations took more of a risk, perhaps 2fm, sure I've heard Gareth O' Callaghan link for quite a while also but its usually requests or some feature thats happening and a lot of features on Breakfast shows would run near 5 min also.
The best moyles bits are when he goes off in a tangent and flips at something, usually a newsreader or at broken equiptment or something silly - its great radio and never fails to make you laugh.

It's a great show - almost always entertaining - largely becuase he breaks the rules...
Only, not everyone is good enough to break the rules...
That's why you have to start by learning the rules... then as you get better - you can decide not to follow them...
Moyles has a great sense of timing, well developed characters around him and an ability to push a joke to breaking point....
But - it does go on and on sometimes - and it just wouldn't work on a commercial station - where you'd have ten minutes of ads an hour... so yay Radio 1 - that's what the BBC should be all about...

As someone who knows Chris Moyles personally, I can tell you he's not breaking the rules...he just comprehends them better than most and knows what to do with them. Because his act has evolved on Radio 1, he can afford to link for that length of time. He understands (unlike so many) what makes compelling radio. As a result of exposing his personality so much, he's largely open to ridicule. He was recently voted the most irritating DJ in the UK. When he started at Radio 1, it was very much music intensive with small snapshots of his personality.
Chris Evans did the same thing. I have a tape of his first breakfast show. Short links...lots of music. Another tape I have is from a few years later. Same show...however Chris doing 25 minute links!!!!!!!!!
But make no mistake, both Evans and Moyles had similar game plans and followed the rules. Very shrewd guys.
IT'S ALL ABOUT PERCEPTION (and with this in mind, you may be interested to know that Chris Moyles is actually very shy when not in the media spotlight).

Something else which might interest people who slate formats-Chris uses one every day!

I suppose when I started this thread I should've mentioned that I think Moyles is the business!! I have no problem with his long links, I actually enjoy them and like Mr Rolo I also tune in for his links and out for his music!
But on a few points....I think Djs listen to the radio for different reasons than the punter on the street, we do tend to listen for the Djs, dont we? I mean seriously, we all have seroius music collections here, if we want to hear music we can slap on a cd/minidisc/memory stick jobby etc etc....so a lot of the time we listen for the presenter! As I said, Moyles really does sound like a lad down the pub. Which raises a few questions in my mind, namely for one is he popular with women listeners? I find it VERY "laddish", its 4 blokes really at the end of the day, talking about guy things and being very bloke orientated? So does that really appeal to the greater female listership!
Secondly, has anyone else noticed that he's not funny in the conventional "this guy walks into a bar" or "have you ever noticed that" kind of way. the humour stems from him being himself?? I had a long post in a thread to the reverend Charles T wolf where i tried to argue this point. I do think he is who he is because he breaks the "rules". You think Joan and dec could come on for 7 minutes and pull that crap?? Hell no! He throws all the rules out the window replacing them with a far more important rule, to be entertaining. And RF i take your point about him having a format BUT he has a loose format that he can work within. Perhaps an idea for a link and where it goes from there is anyones guess. The only time you tend to hear reference to the script is when he departs from it, which it seems to me is quite often, but sure there is an element of organised chaos isnt there?!
My main reason for liking Moyles is because he does everything I do, and that in turn is everything that You're not supposed to. I've often tuned in and recognised myself in his links eg yesterday he crashed a vocal, but he had more to say, so he did what?? Said "here hang on a sec love" and started the song again! Pirate radio at its best, with the added twist that ITS THE BIGGEST STATION IN THE UK!!!! I love it
And on a final point, his cousin used to work on freedom under the name susie, she's hot as hell AND in a moment of anorak history for your information, Chris Moyles was once on Freeedom on a Thursday night for the phone in show with said cousin and a certain Dj power!! So there you go, all truly great jocks must at some stage or other grace the ariwaves of freedom fm!!!!(ahem)

Come on now lads, he's just a jock doing his gig - he's not a fucking God!
That said, I do think he's great, and he definitely does know the rules - listen back to the archives on
www.chrismoyles.net/mw
and you'll see Chris did the formats of GWR and Capital like the commercials do here. He's now in a position with the Beeb to break them. Remember, the Ginger one had to go to Radio One to do the same.
And by the way, to say you "recognise yourself in Moyles" is so bloody egotistical and presumptuous it makes me laugh. Why aren't you on Radio One then?

Good to see that you've posted Chris Moyles website address up - now the vacous bubble headed duos of Dublin radio can rip him off without having to bother even tuning in! (we know who you are!)

Sure, it's ego. But he's got good reason for it. He's brill and he knows it. He's also very comfortable in his gig, so 13 minutes doesn't feel like a long time to him - nor does it to his regular audience. He's also regularly funny throughout that time.

Its so funny how he gets away with it too. As I said, I think he is the dogs testies too!
