Heard the news last night that a good friend and currently a doorman in the Wright Venue was stabbed twice in the back by a punter . In the altercation , two security staff were stabbed and im led to believe these are the same people that were responsible for the near riot situation some weaks ago when Garda had to take control of the venue . Just hoping the guy gets well soon and after speaking to him today , he is in a pretty serious situation as doctors believe the stab wound may have puntured his kidney and bowel .
The other member of security was released from hospital today with a stab wound in the buttock and stitches and thankfully is ok .
This highlights the fact that the criminal factor is out there and would not think twice about putting a knife in security. Many years ago Tony D had a a bottle smashed over his head for not playing a request . Wicked was grabbed in aheadlock for the same reason .
It begs the question in the current climate , should the nightclubs just let anybody in to make money or should they suffer small crowds to save lives . Keeping the scum out is always the best policy in my oppinion but it seems some clubs have let the standards slip right back . We all know that age limits have dropped a little but have standards dropped so much that a group of thugs intent on causing trouble and that have already been ejected for that reason are allowed back into a club a few later to cuase more trouble and possible serious injury to staff or customers just for the sake of the entry fee on the night .
Eithe way , i hope Serge makes a speddy recovery from this terrible incident .
Cheers

I agree that the generation coming through have no fear or respect for anyone..
I hope these people are charged for this ..
I have told people to back off when giging .. In a club at least you have the DJ box as a barrier but as a mobile DJ you are totally exposed .. they just stroll behind the table and put it up to you.. or lean in from the front over your gear ..
If I had to I would thump someone after all other options were exhausted ..

I had two lads approach me as if they were going to jump on me outside the club while waiting on a taxi a couple of weeks back. Now I wasn't too worried: security were about 10 yards away, one of their mates recognised me as the DJ and started chatting and bantering, plus my dayjob is in security so I know how to talk my way out of trouble. But it's just another endorsement of what you're saying here.
Personally, I don't think the answer lies in whether to let scum in or not. That's an obvious no-no. If they've done something serious and are barred: keep it that way. Safety should always come before business. BUT I also think that nightclub managers should be mindful of who they're putting on their doors.
A good bouncing team STILL makes a difference. Don't just hire tanks: hire one head doorman who has the credibility to get everyone else's respect, a couple of madmen if trouble gets out of hands, a few Irish lads who know how to talk the local lingo (makes SUCH a difference), and a few of the strong but sensible types. If you don't have a good mix, you're asking for trouble. Too softly-softly means they'll get pissed on and the club will become a stab city within weeks. Too heavy-handed risks getting the punter's backs up and someone coming back with a shotgun.

it will probably get worse as the years go on. i think a door man will eventually become one of those jobs which people won't want to do

It really is all about the mix of doorstaff and understanding your customer.
I had a similar encounter with the debs over the last few years.
We had a great security team at first, head of security was on the ball and understood the kids but when he left you could see the difference and the number of fights got worse. It was just the way they were handled and treated but it ruins the effort of everyone else.

I would have to agree lads it has got a lot more dangerous out there in the nite. I think myself its sense the headshops came round they had a bad effect lots of the kids whacked out of it in the clubs.I only cover clubs part time for other djs i no now so it would be 3 times a month . I much prefer weddings and party scene. altho loading the gear and setting up is a pain. Thats life ! but bottom line you need your withs about and thats for sure.
