Anyone else listen to Elaine Kane's show on the ever-improving Freedom 92 on Sunday? Next week she's playing the top 10 cheesiest tunes of all time.
She asked for votes, heres mine. (I know she reads this forum)
Every Day by Jason Donovan - whatever happened to him?
Anything at all by Rick Astley - sad 80's dude
Grandma We Love You by Winifrids School??? - pass the sick bucket.
Everything I do by Bryan Adams - how long was it at no1?
Sandy by John Travolta - thinking of the cringeworthy video.
The first Spice Girls single.
I Should Be So lucky - of course!

Anyone any others?

It's a strange sort of masochism, but hey

Whigfield: Saturday Night
Los what ever you choose: Macarena
Chris Rea: Driving home for Christmas
Urban Cookie Collective: The Key the Secret
Steps: Tragedy (but only if you're full of drink and doing the karate moves)
St. Ettienne: Who do you think you are?

I'll wait 'til I'm in a less coherent state of mind to come up with a few more.

Macers

Jan Wayne - Total Eclipse Of The Heart
Geena G - Just A Little Bit
Bobby Joe? (That Tacky track Doing The Rounds At Hot Fm)
Gigi D'Agostino - La Passion

Hey Elaine,

Listened to your show on Sunday, some good new ideas you've come up with - not bad for a blonde!

Im on at nine but ill be doing the cheesy tunes at about ten..... Should be a laugh

Considering developments at Freedom, that surely should have read:

Im on at 9pm (that's 5pm Eastern, 10pm CET, ) but ill be doing the cheesy tunes at about 10pm (6pm Eastern, 11pm CET).....

Here's my cheesiest tune of all time btw:

Wet Wet Wet's Love is all Around

Reason: well it's a love song and for me, it is about love. Back in the mid 90s, almost every other week Sky Sports set this piece of music to a succession of very memorable Manchester United clips, especially featuring the King - Eric Cantona.

And then there's Firehouse - "Love Of A Lifetime" (http://users.cis.net/sammy/firehs.htm) which is mine and Cassie's song...

I look forward to next Sunday...just a reminder Elaine, the whole world will be listening for the first time! Nervous?

One thing i will say to anyone who hasn't listened to Elaine before, her show is perfect Sunday night entertainment,...a great way to wind down after the weekend

KJ
21st November 2002, 02:27
Agreed. I listen to Elaine most Sundays pre-gig and her laid back "ah sure, it's all good" style fits the vibe of the weekend winding down perfectly

A cheesy tune I actually love - Undercover - "Never Let Her Slip Away"

Yeah

Yeah I know

Not a big hit, but played on radio in the UK in the 70s and 80s, I have a copy on minidisc of:
Manhatten Transfer - "Well Well Well (My Cat Fell Down A Well)

Wonderful lyrics including:

"I woke up this morning with a feeling of despair
I looked for my pussy, but my pussy wasn't there"

"I got out a ladder and I climbed down to my pet
I saw in a jiffy that my puss was soaking wet . . "

and

"Pretty as a picture with long and silky fur
I never had a pussy that could quite compare to her"

Quite!

Though if deceased moggies are not your style, can I reccomend ANYTHING by Michael Jackson . . :)

Work in middle of night with horrors thinking of these.

Black Lace: Aggadoo
Aqua: Dr Jones
Berri: Sunshine after the rain
Motiv 8: Rockin' for myself

PS If you're really, really looking for a copy of St. Winifreds School Choir I think I can track it down!

Preset No.3

And whats wrong with motiv 8 - Top Sunset tune!!!

Arnold
21st November 2002, 13:13
I was refering to Aggadoo for the horrors but Rockin' for Myself is a top piece of Cheezy Handbag.

For a three cheeze in a row run 'Ooh Aah Just a Little Bit' into 'Rockin' for Myself' into 'Disco 2000' (Discoid mix). Mmmmm

'I've been thinkin' about you'

Anorak
22nd November 2002, 19:16
Why are they called 'cheesy' tunes?

No ones mentioned The Hamster Dance!

Or that Keith Harris with the big duck, Orville tune.

Here's one "i dont want to sleep, I just want to keep on loving you" cant remember who sings it.

The 80s rock band Heart sang Alone

Nena 99 Red Ballons, the German version if you have it. Thats gonna stop the bomb!

Elaine
22nd November 2002, 19:23
There called cheesy because thats what they are. I dont think it would go down to well if i called them crappy tunes (",)

Anorak
22nd November 2002, 19:32
I was wondering where the word cheesy came from?

Elaine
22nd November 2002, 19:34
Oh right...Doh! I thought thats what u meant!

Em....god, thats a good question???

This is a great thread!

For me cheesy is everything from "Ah Shuddupya Face" which is an absolute classic, to the kids from Grange Hill singing "Just say no"..... ah the memories.....

Anyway, Elaine, if youre ever struggling to find tunes from that era, myself and a certain other dubious individual have a lot of this stuff knocking around on vinyl. The lovely Dane Bowers knows where I am if ye need anything.

Okay, here's my list...

The theme song from "The Beverly Hillbillies"...I know all the words and I sing it to John all the time:D

"Rubber Ducky"...don't know who sang this, some one from "Sesame Street", I think it was Ernie.

"Disco Duck"....Rick Dees???

Anything by (gag) Brittany Spears, in particular "Hit me Baby One More Time"...I went to Catholic School, the Nuns would have had a heart attack!!

Anything by Celine Dion, in particular "My Heart Will Go On"...I'm getting seasick just thinking about it.

"Mickey"...Toni Basil

"They Don't Know About Us???"...Tracey Ullman.

John Fleming
23rd November 2002, 20:02
I'm getting seasick just thinking about it.

That joke was mine. O'Meara have you no shame?

"Ah Shuddupya Face" which is an absolute classic

How could we all forget that?!

My cheesy tunes:

Hold On by Wilson Philips. I actually bought the single and it did help me through a bad time in my life, "Just hold on for one more day..."

T'Pau's China in Your Hand sounds like it wants to be epic but doesn't quite pull it off. Cheesy, but great!

What about this: Simply Red and Holding Back the Years...for one reason only. That scene in Only Fools and Horses when Rodders and Delboy went their separate ways. The tune makes me cry because of that...otherwise i hate it!

Martika and Toy Soldiers. Timeless cheese!

Scarlet - Independent Love Song. For some reason i genuinely love that song.

And there's Convoy sang..sorry, spoken...by some trucker somewhere.

BTW Elaine...how will regular listeners spot the difference during your cheesy top ten?!?!?

Cassie O'Meara
23rd November 2002, 20:40
Me, Shame??
You're kidding me, right?

Great chart, was laughing out loud to myself (mid shave too, dodgy!) when Scatman came on

"I'm the Scatman....repeat after me
It's a scoobie oobie doobie scoobie doobie melody"

lol

What was he on and where can I get some?

Did we really play this circa '94/'95??

I remember playing Scatman once every 90 minutes or so on Hot 107 in 1995 - lets just say it was of its time.

Song from the mid 1970s called "No Charge". "Me and you and a dog named Boo" was quite sad. Wee Papa Girl Rappers "Wee Rule".

Boom Shack a Lack by Apache Indian was fairly dodgy as well - but if you wish to go down the double entendre passage (theres one there!) you may recall a song called "Teddy Bear". No? Read on...

Teddy Bear was one of those songs released to cash in on the CB radio/trucking craze of the late 1970s. In it "Teddy Bear" is the CB handle of a young dying boy whose only wish it is to drive around in a big truck. One kind hearted trucker hears his plea over the CB radio and organises a convoy to the childs house - in order for the kid to go in loads of trucks. Sadly however, the classic line "me and the rest of the truckers took turns to ride around with little Teddy Bear" was misinterpreted by lots and lots of people!

Suprisingly no mention of Sabrina, she had a couple of big hits......
Well from what I remember of the video for "Boys (Summertime Love)" she did.

Just 'cos they sound cheesy, doesn't mean they're not great. Heres some songs that rocked my world.

"Twilight Cafe" -Susan Fassbender. Minor chart hit - but a great record which really stood out at the time.

"Ella Ella la" - Frances Gall. An early MTV Hit from the days when MTV was MTV Europe and played music as opposed to dirt cheap intelligence sucking dross hosted by and starring half wit skater dudes still wasted from spring break. Dude.

"Little Jackie (wants to be a star) - Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. Another early memory of MTV from when they first launched into Dublin (1987). Remember this alongside Sky Trax, Pat Sharp, and Deadly Earnest in the Graveyard every Friday Night on Sky Channel (we're Europes number one!).

"Soldier Toys" - Pop Mechanics. My copy of this is still in Pete Reeds shed (probably) but as far as they know they were a band from Walkinstown with a new romantic image. Brave move.

"Happening all over again" - Lonnie Gordon. S/A/W make a disco classic. From the Hit Man and Her days when guys would dress in suits to go to nightclubs. Actually, I know people who do that for anorak re-unions.

"The Holiday Rap" - DJ Miker G and Sven something or other. Imagine a Dutch DJ wicked doing maniac except its over the top of "Holiday" from Madonna and you get the picture. Didn't cover Love is in the Air as a follow up single however.

"Icing on the Cake" - Stephen Tin Tin Duffy. Charming little pop song, which reminds me of an old flame. Unlike her however, the song has aged well.

"Absolute Beginners" - David Bowie (see Icing on the cake, above).

"Bedsitter" - Soft Cell. So taking drugs and dancing all night is new? Ha. Even when Soft Cell released this classic tune dance culutre was over 20 years old. Few people have ever summed it up quite as well though.

"Best Friend" - the Beat. "I've just found out the name of your best friend, you've been talking about yourself again". Sharp suits - sharp lyrics, all that was good about the late 70's/early 80s.

"E = Mc2" - Big Audio Dynamite. Why are they playing clips of movies over the song? Cos they are way ahead of pop culture my son... Some day, they'll call that sampling - now get back to buying those Paul Young singles.

"Let Me Go" - Heaven 17. The Provisonal Human League or something. We remember Phil Oakleys lot more - but Heaven 17 had their moments (like this one). We can almost forgive them relaunching Tina Turners career.

JUST ABOUT ANYTHING from the Pet Shop Boys. Cos West End Girls sounded like nothing else we had heard. They did a good Elvis cover version - and their song with Dusty Sprinfield will still stand as one of the best moments in pop history.

"Lets Go All the Way" - Sly Fox. One that got away - one of the songs of summer in 1986. All the sixth years from my school listed Sly Fox as their favourite band in the final school year book. I bet they regret that now.

"Girl You Know its True" - Milli Vanilli. Stop sniggering. They took that James Brown sample that Eric B And Rakim and half the world were using and put a nice pop song over it. And it reminds me of the Sunshine 101/ Super Q102 wars of summer 1988.

"Kiss Me Deadly" - Lita Ford. Hey, did she say Laid? Pop Rock should sound like this. A Rick Dees favourite.

"I'll always be grateful" - A House. Uncompromising Irish rock when so many Dublin bands wanted to be the next U2. Not a big fan of the band - but this was their finest hour.

"All I Wanted" - In Tua Nua. Okay, they did want to be the next U2, and stodgy cover versions of Jefferson Aeroplane didn't help. BUT!!! Leslie Dowdall is a stunner, the band could play, and this was an honest song.

"House Arrest" - Krush. One of the big first house hits, Krush was in fact the guy from Moloko. Wonder does Roisin know?

"Hey Matthew" - Karel Fialka (?). Energy 103 favourite of late 1987. Wonder what age Matthew is now, and what ever became of him? Theres something to find out...

A most excellent read there Mr Doom, you should consider journalism if the day job ever packs in (no seriously ;) )

"Happening all over again" - Lonnie Gordon. S/A/W make a disco classic"

Indeed they did ........ I payed through the nose for a second hand 12" copy of this but it was well worth it. Class production and a great pop tune.

"JUST ABOUT ANYTHING from the Pet Shop Boys"

Got their greatest hits there a few weeks back in a sale. They were dance basically, but with lyrics that rose well above the "taaaaake meeee hiiiigher ... oh yeah baaaaaby" euro stuff

Very Surprised that no one mentioned "The Chicken Song" by the Spitting Image People (it was terrible yet went to No.1)

I still cant stand that song by Starship - Nothings gonna stop us now(with the Mannequinn in the window etc). Infact starship where sooooooooo big hair, typical 80s.

Oh and Cassie in the cringe stakes I reckon that Tracey Ullmans other song "Move over Darling" is even more spine tinglingly ground swallow me up than "They dont know about us"!

Joe Dolce - Shuddup you face definetly
Ryan Paris - Dolce Vita (i'm sure the guy was a East End London thug with fake tan)
Whigfield - Sexy Eyes (awfulllllllllllllllll)

oh and

Demisis Rousos - Foerver and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and etc
