So let me get this right, two of the lowest rated stations in the country have their licences renewed (and in the case of Tipp FM the licence has been extended) whilst stations like Tipp Mid West and Radio Kilkenny in their respective franchise areas lose out. Look at the JNLR's and check out the JNLR's. In the case of Tipp FM and MR3 most of the population in the respective franchise areas do not listen, therefore the majority of the poplulation in these areas remain disenfranchised. The BCI should have pointed this out to them and asked them why their broadcasts appeal only to a minority.
For a long time the people of Tipperary have regarded Tipp FM as catering solely for the needs of the North of the county. Likewise MR3 has been a wreck since it started. Listening to MR3 on a daily basis (as I do) is like witnessing a train crash, it's horrible, you want to turn away, but you stay tuned just in case something even worse happens.
The BCI should use the JNLR's as a benchmark and grade stations like examiners. Any station that drops below 40% should be classed as failing the listeners in the area, therefore it is only relevant to a minority of people. The franchises are supposed to have stations of general interest, so if the listeners can't express an interest to listen in three successive JNLR's then the licence should be rescinded and offered to a company that can offer the population of the Midlands or Tipperary a service that will appeal to the majority of people in that area.
Apols if this seems like a weird way to grade stations but surely it is better than the ' we promise to do whatever it takes to get the licence back, please give it back' and for them then to turn around and offer total rubbish. I would also wonder about the veracity of the research carried out by some applicants (not naming any names here) surely if they told the thruth then the research section would go something like this:
'The vast majority of people in our franchise couldn't give a damn if we closed. The majority never listen anyway'

Tipperary Mid West Radio deserves nothing...........
If you don't vote you don't have a say. In this case if you don't apply you don't have a right to complain.
Sheep run the Station. And any success they have enjoyed is as a result of the Staff and Volunteers only.
The BCI and Tipp FM did not take Tipperary Mid West Radio from the people .The Management of both Stations submitted an expression of interest to the BCI last year for more then they had. Never at any stage did TMWR suggest the status quo remain. The BCI then decided to create fair competition for the Tipperary Franchise. When all is said and done only one company applied and they are the winners. Anybody and Everybody at this stage should offer them congratulations. But of course that would be the professional thing to do, but I’m sorry to say that not everybody in The Tipperary Radio business is professional.
Baaaaa Baaaaa black sheep……………
