I see in today's Examiner Lidl are advertising 28" TVs (SEG) for
just 299 Euros on sale from Thursday the 7th (tomorrow)

The ad lists its specs including :
PAL B/G
!

Well the TV system in this country (and the UK) is PAL I (not PAL B/G which is the system in most of mainland Europe), a PAL B/G TV in this country will tune in a picture but NO SOUND!
The ad says nothing about being multi-standard or working with other PAL systems.

I hope the sets in their stores are indeed PAL I, and its just they did not get their facts right in the ad!

Surely in this day and age it is cheaper for manufacturers to make all their sets multistandard rather than having different models for each country

But then again many sets sold here in Northern ireland still dont have VHF tuners despite the fact that in some parts NI the only available RTE signals are from Truskmore (Parts of Tyrone/ Fermanagh/L'Derry) or Kippure (Parts of Co Down)

re. multistandard TVs

Or our own PAL

As 021 points out the French went for SECAM mainly for petty nationalistic reasons (It was invented in France) The Communist countries adapted it because in many countries bordering the Iron Curtain people were watching Western TV and they wanted to discourage it by ensuring they could only do so in black and white. The flaw in the plan was that in these "workers paradises" only the party faithful could afford such consumerist luxaries as colour TV anyway !
Most countries in Eastern Europe have now switched over to the decadent bouergoise PAL
