Is there really anywhere in Dublin that cannot recieve a satisfactory signal from eithet Kippure or Claremont Carn or is it just wasting another set of frequencies for the National FM and TV networks ?

Not really for radio anyways - RTE1 transmit on 88.5 and 89.1 and i've no problem with 89.1 which comes from kippure. I can't remember the frequency but there's at least another apart from 90.7 which gives correct reception.

Remember tho' that it's not only RTE who are using the 3 Rock site - 98FM among others.

I'm not a historian but Three Rock is, I believe, a relatively recent addition. Kippure was assumed to do the business for a long time.

I wouldn't read any intrigue into things though; I don't believe RTE would ever have had enough mone to go around installing sets of transmitters just to throw a spanner in the works for future local stations.

Methinks you give them too much credit for strategic thinking!

The Three Rock TX site is very important. Kippure Mountain is physically blocked over a lot of South Dublin by Three Rock. I can barely get Kippure in Stillorgan, and thats probably only about 10 miles away.

For a number of years RTE broadcast from the tower in Donnybrook to provide coverage for those areas that could not receive Kippure. The Three Rock facility was built in the late 1970s.
