Found this in John's news section

"After five years, the Flood Tribunal has released its interim report. There were a number of key points concerning Century Radio, the national station which was awarded a licence in 1989 but lasted only two years on air.

Justice Flood has found that a £35,000 payment to then minister for communications Ray Burke by Century Radio owner Oliver Barry on 26th May 1989, was a corrupt payment and was not intended by Barry to be a political donation to Burke or to Fianna Fáil. This followed the award of the new national licence to Century.

It was also found that a ministerial directive obliging RTÉ to provide its facilities to Century, issued by Burke on March 14th, 1989, was issued to advance the private interests of the promoters of Century and not to serve the public interest.

Further, in proposing legislation which would have had the effect of curbing RTÉ's advertising, altering the format of 2FM, and diverting broadcasting licence fee income from RTÉ to independent broadcasters, Burke was acting in response to demands made of him by the promoters of Century and was not serving the public interest.

The payment of £35,000 to Ray Burke by Oliver Barry ensured that he was available to serve the interests of Century's promoters, as is evidenced by his willingness to meet with their bankers and to give them assurances that he would take steps, including, if necessary, the introduction of legislation which would be to Century's financial benefit"

Tis a pity it all went pear shaped towards the end for Century because they were turning into a damn good station (and the warmest/best audio Ive probably ever heard on Irish airwaves)

Why oh why arent the BCI a board of ex/and/or experienced radio heads like John Clarke, Colm Hayes etc??

What is there at the moment is a bunch of old men looking after their own interests and envelopes

I Have to agree with that last post completely. The BCI is the child of a corrupt man and to be honest it is funny they have the nerve to not deal with any pirate station who may have operated from 89 onwards, etc etc.

I don`t actually believe that anybody would attempt to label anyone involved with legal radio as corrupt, why the very thought of it, you my friend should be horsewhipped and strung up from the nearest pirate mast. Corruption in legal radio circles, why honestly, I never.

Well said, Kelly.

With all the furore about the brown envelopes, a few basic details are being lost:

1) Century (at the time) was one of the best stations available and would still give many of them a run for their money - when it closed down, the possibility of a revival was the talk of UL for a week!

2) Any station which, by law, had to get its main competitor to provide a transmission network for it, and pay them for it, is ENTITLED to get some form of representation in an effort to get a reasonable rate for the service (I think the concept is nuts, personally, but then Meteor and Eircell Vodafone seem to get on OK)

3) Aside from the above, RTE never got Century up to proper coverage, with the AM signal barely available in Dublin and the FM coverage for many areas (e.g. Kerry) absolutely crap!

4) Century was slated for "voice-tracking" Terry Wogan when the term hadn't even been thought of by the marketing gurus.....does this mean it was ahead of its time ?

I'm not condoning corruption, but I'm just saying that SOME of the things that were attempted to keep Century on the air can be viewed as a genuine attempt to level the playing pitch - something that was certainly required after RTE laid into it with a Today Tonight special to scare off the advertisers!

As I said, great station - far better than Atlantic 252 ever was. So lets give credit to the folks who gave it a shot and gave us a good service (regardless of what was going on behind their backs)

Century Radio.....turn your radios on!

Apart from Century were any other licence applicants for Radio, TV or Cable/MMDS mentioned in t6he flood tribunal and if such licences are shown to have been corruptly awarded can they now be revoked ?

Also what about appointments to the IRTC board and RTE authority ? How were the members chosen ?

Listened to the Late night show on Newstalk last night and heard the former FF hack Noel Whelan admit, albeit under some pressure from the presenter, that should Ray Burke actually be taken to court, and how we would all love to see that, that he would most likely get off, as he could argue that he would be unable to get a fair trial, because of all the coverage of the interim report of the Flood Tribunal

This, tho really scary, is most likely true - what then is the point of having the feckin tribunal in the first place ?

I feel that only highlighting the Century payments (alledged) is unfair, when rumour abounds that there were other stations paid for as well.

The individual chairmen of each radio board + the CEO of each radio station should be called before the flood tribunal.

After we the tax paying public are paying for it and we want to know.
