Just a thought. Most of us know what happened to the big names in Irish radio of the 70's and 80's..especially the Nova/Q/Sunshine crowd.

Whatever happened to a lot of the others though? People like Gerry Cambell, DJ sylvia etc etc. I know Dr. Don is now a faith healer(!), and John Paul still does his discos (I had the misfortune to do a gig with him about 5 years ago!) but what about those names from the late 70's and early 80's that people seem to have forgotten about. Mark Boland? Mike Eastwood? Sarge?

James Dillon runs a video production place....

What happened that they left radio? Did time move on and leave them in a Bee Gees/1970s timewarp?

I'm flicking through the Irish Era sight and came up with more names like "John Everest", DJ Lee, Cyril Walsh

Perhaps if you lived through those times (Hi Ger Roe!), what was it that made some people make it to the super-pirates and RTE, while the others faded away? Some of the biggest names and noises on radio these days were considered the 'lesser' jocks of that era.

Well,Mike Eastwood I think is Mike Edgar who went on to NOVA and then to set up his own communications company in south dublin. Is DJ Lee not an actor in the States(Titanic)? The last i heard of Steven Rhodes,ex Big D,was on Family Fortune on ITV(congradulations, you have won for yourselves a DIY drill).

Now, those are names I haven't heard in a LONG time! I remember some others that would have been at Radio Dublin in the late 70's - Alister Mac, John Paul (already mentioned) James Dillon, Dave C. Kieran Murray, Dennis Murray - anyone remember the Radio Dulin gigs in the old TV club in Harcourt Street?

A few more spring to mind from ARD/Big D - Al O'Rourke, Debbie Moore, DJ Roland, Dave Moore, Neil O'Shea (a Gentleman), Shay West, DJ Ross, Eric Vaughan.

I also remember the disco in Mary Street at the back of the Big D studio - where Penney's Mens shop would now be (I think) and all of us drinking in the Commodore Pub (was the corner of Jervis Street/Parnell Street) Anyone else remember these days - they are fading into a hole in my brain.

Isn't Mike Edgar the man who presented and now produces "Beyond the Line" (I think that's what it's called) on BBC Radio Ulster?

" ARD/Big D ......... Eric Vaughan"

He is nowadays Eric Griffin on 103FM County Sound in Co. Cork (but excluding the West Cork opt-out)

strangely after County Sound lauched he initially used the on-air name 'Eric Vaughan', but later this was changed to Eric Griffin (his real name I presume)

Mike Eastwood - don't think he was Mike Edgar, I think his real name was Mike Cotter and he was originally from Inchicore.

The last I heard of Afternoon Swoon's DJ Lee was when he spoke by phone to Gerry Ryan. He was in America at the time acting in a film. That must have been 2/3 years back.

Pat Jennings was Radio Dublin's Rock Jock but where did he ever get to. He used to work in a record shop in the Dandelion market but seemed to get out of radio completely.
Denis Murray runs a course in broadcasting in Ballyfermot.

Does anyone know what happened to a DJ called James Redmond. I think it was his original name.
He was on Radio Dublin on Sunday nights 10-2am with an easy listening show called The Smooch. He was also on Saturday Mornings, in the mid 80s I think
Thanks

The Ray Summers mix!

That guy could really mix ......... and not a million miles from Greg Merriman's Tamango's style either (did Niall Boylan do Tamango's too?)

I once worked with 2 James Redmond's ........ one got me going with gigs years ago and I owe him a lot of graitude .... the other, well he's not the nicest of chaps (and thats been nice)

One had a moustache and one is from Cherry Orchard ............ which one do you mean?

Hi Kelly
The James Redmond I am talking about had short black hair and a tash. I dont think he lived in Cherry Orchard unless he moved recently.

Niall Boylan did do Tamangos once or twice. I've heard the tape of him from the sunshine 101 megamix in 1987 from the days when commercial dance meant anything ever by Stock/Aiken/Waterman and Level 42 were floor fillers! Oh - and he was shit hot back then as well (Shame about the bushy tache though).

Mike Edgar used to work on Big D before he joined Radio Nova. I think he then went on to manage Nova Park for Carey. Different guy from Radio Ulster. Eric Griffin is his real name as far as I can remember. I worked with him in the 80's on Boyneside, Carousel and ERI.

Whilst I am on, does anyone in Dublin know where Niall Mc Gowan is?? Again I worked with him on Boyneside in 81/82, we shared a house in Drogheda. Last heard of him working on Energy 103 in 1987. I would love to get in contact with him after all these years

Probably 2 of the best clubs dublin has ever had .

What ever happened to Pat Gill? I think Mark Boland AKA Alan Hilton is a chemist in Bray. I wonder did Gerard Roe ever get his hands on his recordings as I'm sure he had a great collection. He really was professional and a great voice.

Hi Greenman,

I featured a short clip of Mr Bolan on SSR during todays Anorak Hour. I was a big fan at the time and as I said on the show, he has a lot to answer for... filling my young(ish) impressionable head with pirate radio stories ! I never actually met the man, even though I live in Wicklow myself and would be in Bray regularly, some day I must call in and make contact.

As for Pat Gill..... now that takes me back too. I have no idea where he went ,but only this week I came across some recordings of him on Radio Dublin - recorded in reasonable FM quality. I will put a feature together next week that should bring back memories.

Regards,

Ger Roe.

Hi J D,

It's been a while since I heard from you - good to know you are still listening. This computer gysmatrology is great stuff, a far cry from the early AM days. I knew it had to be someone of our vintage with the names you were mentioning !

I always thought Glen Stevens of Sunset/Hot 107/Vibe was under-rated and then there was Dave Lowe who would easily have a prime legal gig now had he not given it up

KJ

;)

PS - edited the title of this thread slightly to encompass great jocks from the 90's too
