Now that MWR has retained it's licence for a further 10 years, what will the youth of Mayo listen to if they want to enjoy the luxury of a local station?
It's no secret that MWR have no plans to cater for the under 25 population of the county (by thier own admission to the BCI at the oral hearings in Galway) as they feel this audience is of little or no relevence.
Will CRC fm in Castlebar now be given more power and some commercial allowance to cater for this chunk of the population? They already produce some very good youth programming alongside current affairs (another weak spot for MWR) so maybe the BCI will sort something out for these markets soon before Mayo becomes a breeding ground for pirates?

Before CRC becomes a serious contender they would have to dramatically improve their scheduling presentstion and technical standards.
Whatever happened to the proposal for a second Mayo station on 103.7 ? People in Mayo cry out for an alternative and they get Knock FM ?????
Mayo and Castlebar in particular given its relatively small size has long being a fertile ground for pirates the latest being Pure FM (95/105.3) Also theres Static FM testing on 106.5 and the very sporodic hobby station Choice 102.1

Well, what did I say? A breeding ground for pirates!
And yes Mike, how right you are. CRC would have to improve all round. But if they have the ambition and the backing of the BCI, these guys could put on a decent show targeting the youth market in Mayo. Remember they were involved with Coast FM the aplicant that bid against MWR. They had lined up some decent talent for that station, had they won the bid. People like Keith Cunningham (Red FM), Joe Woods (ex RTE), Rory O'Brien (ex NWR) and have connections throughout the industry for V/O and syndicate material. Also, they would have the pick of the local pirates where there are some good young jocks. Read both applications on the web and you wonder what went wrong? A low budget station would suceed in this market in Mayo.

Just back from a trip through Ireland, Bland is an understatement, there is no consideration at all given to the youth of this island..The left hand side of the dial belongs to RTE and Rnag as for the local stations, Unless you`re willing to spin those wheels of steel in the kitchen of some clown whose ram has just won best of breed at the local sheep show you really need to emigrate. It`s time for the knobs who hand out the licences to realise that they are not dealing with a country of over 60`s.. Sometimes I just despair.
