Ok , youv'e been give the job of controlling radio in ireland .
Your first task is to remove 3 radio stations of your choice and close them down .

Which 3 would you choose and why?.......

1. Dublin's Country because they have failed to deliver what they promised.

2. Cork's 103 because one company should not hold 2 franchises for the same area (Cork's 96 can introduce opt-outs to make up for the loss).

3. North West Radio because they don't play enough diddly-eye during daytime programming for my liking (a new quota will be introduced for all stations in the west - and I might introduce it to all stations if it is sufficiently unpopular!)

Anyway I'm the Controller of Radio in Ireland I don't have to justify my decisions:)

R na G because it is a waist of money and my granda has forgotten irish and does not even listen any more. 103.2 because every time I
listen it is playing crap or even talking crap and radio dublin
because ...hummm to many reasons to mention time to hang up their ear
phones me thinks.

Rather than CLOSING stations Id licence more (although I wouldnt allow any group or individual other than RTE and the BBC own shares in more than one station) competition would ensure that crap stations would eventually close down of their own accord.

I dont agree with lcence payers money being used for stations like Rte Radio 2/2FM and BBC Radio One but these stations could be privatised rather than closed down

I would agree with 16dB's choices there and also add Heartbeat (same tunes rotated over and over and over again, well done Joe!), Cabra's Choice FM if they're still on (some of the worst radio Ive heard this year unfortunately) and every single small community station in the country - they should be either merged or taken off the air altogether

On the flipside tho, ........ what 3 stations would you like to see put ON the air?

Only have two Kelly Jones can't wait for spin to start up these
test transmissions are getting annoying especially because they
are still asking us what we what we want "you asked for it"
Before launching lets hope they get more organised they couldn't
launch like this could they sure would any one listen.

Also news talk they have been testing their blank carrier for longer than I can remember offcourse the blank could be only on
nights because I do night work I don't get a chance to listen
during the day
can't wait for them to launch look foward to some current affair
as well as good talk radio
" WONDER WILL THEY LAUNCH ANY TIME SOON"

Any one any dates !

Why remove three radio stations? The same nutshell comes up again here where most people would end up choosing stations they simply don't like. RnaG for example has an important public service remit (and I don't speak any Irish) particulary to those in the Gaeltacht areas. While I would agree with Mike's stance that more stations should be licenced so that only the strongest would survive public radio must cater for as many needs as possible. This is being seen with the expansion of the BBC's Asian network and the launch of 1xtra which concentrates on black music. BBC Radio 1 I think does a great job in its remit particulary in rural areas where there is still today in no other choice - and Atlantic 252 is badly missed here. Outside of cities and large towns you are still unlikey to find a station that is popular music based like Radio 1 is.

Back to topic, if I HAD to remove three stations it would be... wait, I'd rather just make three decisions...

1. The forced re-seperation of Shannonside Northern Sound

2. The re-merger of RnaG and Lyric FM (aka FM3). RnaG could retain it's evening services by using 2FM's 612KHz Transmitter and fill in FM TX's in Gaeltacht areas

3. 2FM split into two stations, a youth music station (similar to BBC R1) for under 35's on FM and a new station similar to BBC R2 used on the 252LW frequency.

If i was in charge?

I'd make an amnesty for pirate stations and legalise every station on air now - with across the board conditions.

Then I'd limit the amount of automation a station could use to a couple of hours peak-time and to the overnight hours. That would get rid of most of the dross.

I'd do away with the news and current affairs requirement, but would find other ways for the stations who opt not to carry news to contribute to society.

I also would encourage stations to provide alternative services on MW.
