Kinda a follow on from the Cheesy dance tunes you hate thread in Anything Goes... some djs/presenters were saying that they'd never play scooter, gigi, etc cause they're crap. So I was wondering, how much would you base your show/gig on YOUR musical tastes rather than the crowds/requests?

I might hate La Passion, but that doesn't mean I don't have to play it twice a night (not anymore, but when it was in its 'peak' time). Same applies for scooter, thought admittedly I've never managed to play that more than once. But when FM104 and 2FM play the Logical Song, and its #1 in the irish charts, can we really justify NOT playing it?

No no really, I think Dj's whether it be at gigs or on the radio are more afraid of losing credibility than genuinley not wanting to play the tracks.

I think it's more on radio than at gigs though, I don't do any club or pub gigs but I know from going out a lot that all of the above really gets the crowd going.

I would think twice about playing gigi d'agostino on my show, but give me a few vodka & limes in a nightclub and just try hold me back from the dance floor!

I think if a dj knows it will get the crowd going they don't really care what it is. But like I say I don't do club djing so I wouldn't know!

Depends on the venue lads .
Some clubs get away with quality dance tunes ,mainstream , r&b,commercial pop and hip hop but a track like Scooter wont really appeal to an intelligent audience .
Just because it's no 1 dosent mean it has to be played .
Would you play ''Celine Dion '' just cause she's no 1 ? NO you wouldn't {unless your in copper face jacks ].

Personally i think it's the worst load of unentertaining garbage put together by a bunch of talentless idiots who have a a direct line to Frank Kennedy .

Most good dj's will find something better to fill a gap and nobody will even notice it hasn't been played .... I think ????

just an opinion thats all ..

Well if nobody notices, then its happy sailing. But I'm talking about tunes which people request all night long, which you personally don't like.

A tough call

I personally detest Scooter and would have to be inundated with requests (we're talking loads) to play The Logical Song. Its Lowest Common Denominator shhhhhhhhiiiiiiiite, lets be honest!

The thing is, if you play the Scooter song 50% of you crowd might go doolally and the other 50 will absolutely hate it - and maybe even you, lol................ but on the flipside - if you play DJ Sammy "Heaven" >>>> 50% will go "eh, what's this ........ Ive heard this somewhere before" and the other half will be giving it loads on the dancefloor. I suppose what Im trying to say is The Logical Song is over-played, hence its in the "decline" stage of the cycle. Too much of a (bad) thing

So I was wondering, how much would you base your show/gig on YOUR musical tastes rather than the crowds/requests?

A club DJ (proper dance, POD, Spirit etc) would split it down to 70% entertainment, 30% Education (and some of the UK club jocks more so, preffering to look at the crossfader rather then the dancefloor) ................ Mainstream DJing is more like 90/10% with the emphasis on a party atmosphere .......... this doesnt mean you shouldnt try new tunes tho. Nothing is worse then a DJ playing it safe. Is that why you really got into DJing? To go into auto-pilot and collect a wage at the end of the week? You could have done that in the Civil Service! :p

In my opinion ill play stuff like scooter if its requested even though i may have to lower the volume in the studio till its over. To be honest i think most of the stuff out now is complete crap or else a good song like "heaven" by bryan adams turned into a crappy dance version. The songs i hate playing-Scooter, madonna VS legend, dj otzi, gigi, and all that put together in 5 mins crap. I Know it is whats popular and requested (why i dont know?) and im not slagging anyone who does like all those songs but gimmie a good owle song with some decent lyrics and an origanal tune anyday!!!

I'm with Elaine....some crap can (or has to) be justified based on it's popularity, but when you've to cover your ears or deliberately put a different track on in the cans then you're doing the wrong gig with the wrong audience!

Gimme a decent party atmosphere over a chart/dance/"education" gig any time.....

There will always be tunes that you don't like, but if they're a floor filler and fit in with your venue/set then as a professional you feel obliged to plat them.
There is always one muppet that's constantly up at the DJ box, as you're playing funky house, requesting scooter and doesn't understand that all dance music cannot be put into one category and therefore will not fit in.They don't seem to understand that you're not a jukebox!
I find that it excuses such as I don't have it with me/ It's scatched/ the dog ate it (delete where appropriate) can work but do get a messy. A simple "thats a crap tune - shame on you" usually gets rid of them!!

yep I hate having to play the scooter etc tripe but its just gotta be done, its all part of the job. The cringing thing is the amount of requests i got on Saturday for the Ketchup song AGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH !!!!

If I dropped Scooter at one of my gigs then the only thing left on the floor would be tumbleweed!!
Not one Friday goes by though on the radio where I don't get at least one call to ask for Scooter ("buh dah izz herd howss" they usually cry) or the latest commercial tune. It's only a small percentage of who calls in, but it does sometimes make you wonder about some peoples understanding of the music.

Exactly. Anyone who looks for The Logical Song is either 16 or has the IQ of roughly 16 :p That tune is just a pet hate of mine.

Re; Las Ketchup .............. got a few requests over the weekend but only one or two per gig - still not enough to risk a play on the floor (how is this crap gonna work??! lol). Having said that, give it another week (when pretty much everyone will be back from holidays) and we wont have a choice but to play it

Most scooter and dune fans have never really been to a proper club and are totally ignorant when it comes to real dance music .

They are very easy to spot , they normally drive a black Nissan Micra with wide wheels and black tinted windows , their sense of fashion is a Ben Sherman shirt or a Kickers top which they probably bought in Unique boutique during the sales . A Celtic jersey is a must when meeting a Mot for the first time and none of them have ever heard of Pete Tong . The only time they ever wear a shirt and tie is either , when they are in court for public order offences or their mother is finally getting married ....

Lol

I think the term you're looking for is "knacker" Clubhappy. I dont and wont play to these breed of Dubliners. If a venue starts letting too many of them in I'll leave the gig rather then play to "storrreeee bud"s.

im with Darren, it has to be the most annoying piece of crap ive ever heard. sometimes the dj has no choice, especially if its a pub gig. u get away with more if you are doing a club.

Succumbed to the many requests and played it tonight (first time Ive said a prayer pre-tune in years) and .............. and ............. it went down a storm!

There's just no accounting for bad taste and holidays songs unless you witness it first hand in a warmer climate I suppose

Seeing people suddenly break into this dance is by turns surreal/tacky/funny but we better get used to it I suppose. We've at least 6 weeks of this crap ahead, lol

I have a mad trancey mix of it, you wouldn't recognise it at all though in a club.
