drinking on the job has been a part of dj culture for yonks and it reminds me of a story about a very well known dublin jock .
having had a reputation for getting hammered at nearly every gig he did {always did the bizz though }, his sence of humour and ''dont give a bollocks attitude always got him through with flying colours .
playing away as usual one night , a couple of wannabee dj's decided to watch and learn , hours passed and the empty glasses began to build up and the music got better .
one of them poses a question to the blurry eyed jock and asks why he has his name written on the center piece of the record ,''is it in case somebody steals it and you'll know its yours when you get it back ????
NO , came the reply , ''it's so ill know which side to put on when i f***in pissed ...
ps ...did a gig once and ended up owing THEM money

There`s NO EXCUSE for drinking on the job, and honestly I never need an excuse.....

Any time I gig I just don't drink. I'm sure some of the 'old boy' brigade can do so (no insult intended) and still put on a great show, but I don't feel confident enough to be able to have a rake of pints while working. I might manage a couple of glasses of Red Bull, but thats it. After work though is an entirely different matter!!!

Well, it depends really.
Having one bottle in your last half hour is ok if you're heading off to meet up with mates later ............. however drinking shorts or pint after pint till you decide it would be a great idea to lie down on the ground, sing along with the music and DJ with your feet isnt so good ;)
Some of those DJing for many many years need a few drinks to get into the gig I think tho
*Some*, not all

I sometimes enjoy a drink while working ,once it's not over the top .
dont think theres anything wrong with it as long as it dosen't interfer with the performance ......

i know of many djs who are totally pissed before they even get near their equipment. personally, it depends on the night, sometimes im not bothered wether i do or dont.i supposed its down to if the dj is more comfortable doing the gig with a few pints or not.

I know of a few in legal radio in Dublin who are quite pissed before going on air. Its not on, its like going into work drunk, you'd be fired straight away.

When I was in 6th year in school some of the teachers would go for a liquid lunch in the local and come back a tad "merry", yet they got away with it because it wasnt *too* noticable and they weren't sloshed (in better spirits then they were pre-lunch shall we say!)
If a DJ opens the mic and gives a better performance for it *and* we dont notice it (no dead air, strange links, slurred speech etc) then whats the problem??
PS - who was the DJ again who wouldnt take part in Nova's (?) drinking marathon on air and left as a result? Was it Gareth o C?

;)
PPS - wasnt a certain Energy 103 jock reknowned for drinking IN the studio?! lol

Drinking and Gigging?? hmmmm........
I've been here in Gran Canaria now nearly 3 years, and EVERY Dj I know here, sorry, bar 1, drinks on the job, some maybe a crate (24 btls) of heineken a night, granted 2 of these bottles just makes a pint, and on some occasions I have done too, along with the aftershocks, tia maria shots, wkd shots etc etc....then the change over to Vodka n Redbull for the remainder of the night. Point is, a lot of Dj's need the dutch courage. I used to drink during my gig, only up until 3 weeks ago in fact. Now don't get me wrong, I'd call it situational drinking. It's the environment I'm in, 7 nights a week, in the bar and then the club to follow. There can be an awful lot of drink consumed. Basically it was drinking just for the sake of it. My advantage is (and I only remember having this privilege in 1 club in Ireland) I drink for free, unlimited in the Bar and the club I work in. If I had've been paying for it, ha!!! I'd be owing them money for the tab!!
I've stopped drinking during my gig because its boring the f**k out of me.
Whoever reckons its wrong to drink on a gig isn't exactly wrong, it just all the depends on how the Dj reacts or copes with the gig on alcohol. Im fine for the best of the time, with the odd eh, exception...
Here's 1 for you before I go....2 years ago myself and friends were out for dinner before I had to go to my gig, and of course there were pre-dinner beers, a lot of wine during dinner (16 bottles between 4) and then a few post dinner beers, not forgetting the stomach settling complimentary shots as well!!! Anyhow, got to work bout an hour late, in for 12 all blurry-eyed, god did I get a starry-eyed surprise!!!! About an hour into the gig I'm absolutely F**ked for want of a better word and, well, it happened, I played Maniac 2000...Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Leaning against the back of the Dj box, going lower...and lower and lower and....yup....even lower again screamin ogey ogey ogey as I decend in to dream land!!! Fell asleep doing the maniac in a packed bar full of tourists, 2 minutes of silence before anybody realised where I was!!....and its only 1 o'clock!!! It took a punter to come in to the rescue and press play on the cd player only guess what played??!!.... Maniac bloody 2000, auto cued back and he pressed play!!!
Lesson learned: Never drink 4 bottles of wine a long with half a brewrey to wash it down!! It was funny a couple of days later when the hangover wore off. Probably 1 of my most memorable, unmemorable moments...if you get what I mean.
Anyway, gotta go now, the sun calls................
Talk to you later guys,
Tony.
ps. Kelly, will be in touch.

Hi Kelly,
the guy on Nova who refused to drink on air was O' Callaghan - and he was ejected from the station because of it. i dont know the exact details of it though.
the answer to your other question was a well known J. O'H. He used to sound great every night he was on (he always sounded a bit more laid back on Sunday afternoons). He used to slurp out of his pint between songs sometimes - you'd hear a song fade out, the sound of the studio, cars going by etc..then a bit slurp, then a big aaaaahhhhhhhh, then bang into a song.
what a great jock!
I know other jocks who used to drink through their shows aswell but they never did it with as much class as J.O'H!

he did it a couple of times before but never as bad as this time round!
he did risk the contract but its lucky im a good sweet talker and salvaged it. (means covering all the gigs myself.)
he is a good jock and never had a complaint before this.
but when people are paying 500e for a room and dj they dont wanna dj who cant walk straight.
hhhmmm i dont know.
but i was setting up earlier and they said they dont wanna see him on the premises again.
.
soo he must have really pi**ed off a few heads.
