Apparently the reason it was WKLR instead of WCLR was because they did not want to be known as 'Water Closet - Local Radio'
It was on from 1984-end of 1988. originally it was more of a pop station, but ended up catering moreso for older listeners. I have a recording of it in its final few weeks with Jerry O'Connor on air (now of Spin FM, previously INN)
Paul Sheehan of Radio Kerry and John Green of 103FM County Sound West Cork were deeply involved in it.

I remember it well and paid it a visit in 1984 when my friend Steve Marshall was working there. I think it started with big ideas and had people like Peter Madison and Keith York. Andy Ellis did the transmitter installation. It did go from a pop station to a more "oldies and Irish" sound. Closed in 1988, but was only on FM leading up to that, the AM had been switched off sometime earlier. There was another WKLR on when I visited Cork in July 2000 broadcasting on FM from Bantry, There was some connection with the original, but I think that closed last year.

Brian Crowley MEP was for a time a presenter on WKLR (I do not remember him or what name he used on air? can anyone?)
In fact he wasn't the only Munster MEP to have been a pirate radio presenter!
Pat Cox was once a presenter on Big L in Limerick doing some sort of current affairs show.

Brian Crowley used his real name...incidently WKLR was located next to Flor Crowley's Bar(Brian's Dad)..another true fact is Flor Crowley was an ex Fianna Fail and Danjo his bar manager was a ex head of police of West Cork!......
some of the people involved with WKLR
Dave Heffernan...CEO and Sales person...
Paul Sheehan
Peter Madison
Roger Gregg
Yorkie
Steve Marshall(who ever he is!)
Caroline Crowley..who did the Saturday Morning CC Club
John Green
Tony Allan
Paul Graham
and many more!
some highlights.......
doing the Hitline! great fun
watching Paul Sheehan, getting a load of local schoolgirls to shout the jocks names into a microphone(yup we used the ids on the air)"high pitched screams....West Cork Local Radio!"
The WKLR nights out.....in Clon and Bandon, and a few other places:)
The Odd Couple show presented by Jimmy Hayes( a West Cork legend) and Dave Heffernan....legendary!
The all over Cork record...the same song at 7.30am on WKLR, South Coast Radio and ERI....
apparently milkmen in Bishoptown(where you could hear WKLR and South Coast) used to listen to the two radio stations in their cabs.......
indeed WKLR was called that because WCLR would have had other meanings!..incidently the id package was produced by Alfasound, with the old Centre Radio package!
yup great memories

WKLR were offered a licence in 1989 but some mess up over finance led to them handing it back with the result that one company ended having a monopoly in three overlapping franchise areas. A few years later a WKLR did make a brief return to the airwaves as a pirate. Was this the same group ?
