RDS station names (PSs) and PI codes list
For Justin Speck, and anyone else who collects this info, or is
curious about RDS, all this was collected recently with the RDS
decoder chip in a tuner interfaced to a PC via the serial port and
a freeware program (pity its in German). Worth mentioning that
most ordinary RDS receivers show everything as upper case
i.e. "LYRIC FM" instead of "Lyric FM"
at home (I needed a directional aerial to get a few of these with RDS):
| Datum | Zeit | PI | PS >|*|P |T|T|M|DI|Groups|

additions, got when staying in Co Clare:
| Datum | Zeit | PI | PS >|*|P |T|T|M|DI|Groups|
| | | | |-|TY|P|A|S| | | freq
|----------|--------|----|--------|-|--|-|-|-|--|------| received on:

|08.08.2002|02:13:27|2417|G BAY FM|*|12|1|0|M| 1|00006B| 96.8
In Co.Clare could just about get galway Bay FM's Galway city 95.8
out on the car radio. The RDS name changed to " GBFM " during
the nightly opt-outs!

Thanks for thinking of me!
I've often thought about trying to get a similar setup running myself but sloth has so far prevented me!
If you need any help with the German let me know.

While we're on the subject of RDS, does any one know where i could get a datasheet for the BU1923F RDS chip, as it's the type used in my Bush portable radio, and i want to decode RDS data like Justin Speck above??

Trev, do you have anymore info on that chip like:
Who manufactured it
What does it do
Is it a a PIC chip or EEPROM???
Let me know and i'll try and source the Data sheet for you??

If you're *really* keen, you could download the datasheet at:
http://www.chipdocs.com/pndecoder/datasheets/ROHM/BU1923F.html
However, they want money! The chip is made by Rohm. Have a look at www.rohm.com. They don't list the 1923. Maybe it has been superceded by the 1924.
BTW, 021, which program are you using, there are two or three all of which are of German origin.

RDSS0375.exe is the program concerned.
take a look
www.ping.be/~wijnherm/software.html
which includes a link to download it (and 3 others)
There can be problems getting this one to run on fast PCs!

Its easy enough to tell which pins are DATA and CLOCK on an RDS decoder chip using a oscilloscope, that’s how I did it.

Temporary station CSN-FM (107.2), licenced for 30 Thursdays during the academic year (first one yesterday), from the broadcasting/media course at CSN, also has RDS, "CSN-FM ":

pir8 station Friendly (104.0) PS= "Friendly" , PI ="0000"
This and the original posting gives details of all the stations with RDS in Cork city and County, some surrounding county stations as well as national stations.
(BTW the date and time above (when the station was tuned in) is the PC's clock (its not from RDS data))

During Skip (Sporadic-E) conditions on 5/6/2003 got the following Spanish
stations (I didn't note frequencies):
|05.06.2003|16:50:08|E235|CUARENTA|*|11| 1|-|-|-?|
|05.06.2003|17:09:29|E303|E.GAZTEA|*|10| 1|0|M| 9|
2FM from Crosshaven relay (90.4) being off-air for a couple of days
some time ago allowed me to receive BBC R3 on 90.3:
|29.04.2003|09:37:24|C203| BBC R3 |*|14|0|1|M| 9|
Two stations have differing PS or PTY from different transmitters! (see above). All received with dipole aerial on tall mast. 'Live 95FM' from Limerick sometimes briefly comes through good enough for RDS when planes fly overhead! (due to reflections).
M/S indicates if station is mainly music (M) or speech (S) ! some contradictions above.
If your wondering what the PTY (Programme Type) numbers stand for see below.
I noticed BBC R4 changing PTY to match the programme. Not sure if any Irish stations do this.
PTY: 0 - undefined, 1 - News, 2 - Current Affairs, 3 - Information, 4 - Sport, 5 - Education, 6 - Drama, 7 - Culture, 8 - Science, 9 - Varied, 10 - Pop Music, 11 - Rock Music, 12 - Easy Listening (MOR) Music, 13 - Light Classical, 14 - Serious Classical, 15 - Other Music, 16 - Weather, 17 - Finance, 18 - Children's Programmes, 19 - Social affairs, 20 - Religion, 21 - Phone In, 22 - travel, 23 - Leisure, 24 - Jazz Music, 25 - Country, 26 - National Music, 27 - Oldies, 28 - Folk Music, 29 - Documentary, 30 - Alarm Test, 31 - Alarm.
Toyota car radios I have seen must not decode this properly as Lyric FM PTY (13) shows as "Pop" on them!!
Hopefully certain people find all this interesting.

I love replying to really old posts like this. I have a very big interest in RDS and before the launch of NEWSTALK i recieved some very interesting stations, i don't know how but the RDS names stuck in my head so here you are
87.7 - __PLAY__ - (POP M) French - seemed to advertise a wine festival in Bordeaux? - Good enough even with language barrier picked up time and time again
95.8 - ONDACERO - Unknown location - shite
102.4 - EUROPE 2 - Unknown Location - Speech
90.0 - 92.2 ????? - ??? 1 - German - Good - I study the German language and she said "Mein Englisch ist schlecht" when attempting to translate a song - that meant "My English is (bad/shit etc.)"
107.8 - R ITALIA - prob. italian but questionable due to high frequency usually you would expect main national stations to be located low in the band?
there are many more but those stuck in my head.
one very interesting thing was picking up Galaxy FM - a favourite of mine form Sky digital - some fluke
well now you are either gasping for more or bored out of your skull so bye now.:)
