Does the JNLR really work?

I know the JNLR is the best tool we currently have to judge listenership but does it really portray it with any accuracy?

It misses out on over spill.. FM 104, 98, Red, etc have massive audiences outside their licenced areas for example. Border areas like East Donegal etc all have access to BBC on FM and many listeners tune into BBC etc on MW and LW all over the country.

Also, does the survey system work? Surely you'll remember the station that blasts its name out 40 times an hour much more accurately than others. This has to have a massive impact on the accuracy of the survey. People will obviously report the best marketed station not necessarily the one they listen to the most.

Also the sample size seems to be too small and can hardly be fully representative..

I think a number of stations have much larger listenerships than is reflected by the JNLR survey.

One glaring issue is the fact that RnaG is not included. We have 2 national special interest stations (RnaG and Lyric), yet only one of these, Lyric, seems to be analysed by the JNLR
WHY?

Cause nobody listens to RnaG, waste of time getting it included ;)

Nah, seriously though, I think its cause they don't pay to get included? Maybe the solution is government funded market research? I don't particuarly like this idea though cause, well... we're supposed to be encouraging deregulation rather than the opposite way around.

RnaG, according to themselves has over 100,000 listeners. But regarding other stations A252 was never included on a JNLR but had hugh listenership in Ireland esp early on. BBC never included. And what of the pirates. Obviousl;y some have dam all listeners bbut others do have hugh numbers. And of course community radio, something close to my heart, is never mentioned.

Is this double standards? Big radio business trying to pretend no one else exists?

In the midlands we have midlands radio 3 while some of the presenters are ok the station itself completely lacks direction or credibility, and the jnlrs reflect this in a very consistant manner. the results if examined carefully never spike for any station this can only mean a very comprehensive questionaire on behalf of the people involved thus making the jnlr survey completely acceptable
