View Full Version : Shock Jocks - Good Or Bad?

Hmmmmm, shock jocks - a thorny issue at times.
I'm sure by now we've all heard the controversial 'talents' of Mr. Stern and company - however is he doing more good than bad to the morality of society in these fragile times? Or is this kind of entertainment what radio is all about?
Can the radio industry not come up with something a tad more on the mature side? Or do the youth of the nation (and the globe) want immature antics on air? If so, why isn't Spintalk getting too far :P?
Perhaps someone can shed some light on this subject for me...

I dont think Shock Jocks (who *really* shock) will ever be big in Ireland simply because we are still a pretty conservative country. Take that stunt Opie and Anthony pulled recently - the Irish catholic community would have had seizures.
Ive never heard a jock come close to shocking on Dublin airwaves - although the Afterdark show is always worth a laugh and the comedy show on Spin does try to push the envelope at times.
Re - Stern - he's a legend as far as Im concerned. Get your hands on his biography if possible, its an excellent read

Howard Stern my arse.................
Im sick to the teeth of people thinking that Stern is the only bloody "Jock" in the world who can carry off entertaining Talk Radio.
Ya fine....Howard Stern is Good and Great but far from god....
I can give you three Radio Shows that would lose him and guess what they all come from one Station.
Ladies and Gents...Let me present..

The nearest thing to "shock" radio Ireland has ever had was the final night phone in on NSR a few years ago. When Talk R UK first came on we were promised "shock jocks" but while it was interesting radio it could have hardly havve been described as shocking.
Personally as a concept I think "shock radio" sucks not because Im concerned about "morality of society in these fragile times?" or suchlike nonsense but because like lapdancing its tacky and immature

well we have our shock joking here in Cork,
Yet it must be the opposite situation in Co.Tipperary :) where some people ban a harmless song.; Earlier on this year one Sunday evening I was driving through and listening to a show playing Irish/country music etc, on Tipp-MidWest. The presenter declared she would not be playing a Ritche Kavanagh song that someone had requested as children are listening and that it wasn’t suitable for them!
She didn’t mention the name of the song in question but I presume it is the one called ‘Pussy’
Surprising that Charlie Wolf doesn’t get a hold of this song and start playing it a few times every night, like some of the other stuff we are subjected to, the same stuff over and over again!, like the Knocknaheeny Bus Song and so on

Disliking "Shock jocks" has nothing to do with being conservative.... it's just a matter of taste (or lack of same).
Someone who says or does something controversial just to get attention is pretty sad.
There's always 2 types of interviewers/talk presenters who can be pretty good to listen to:
1) someone who keeps an open mind, facilitator-style and
2) someone who nails their colours to the mast to start a discussion or debate and then opens the phone lines to both sides, occasionally joining in
If, however someone says or does something simply because they know they'll get a reaction, that's pretty sad. There's an element of taking the piss that's OK, if you make it clear soon enough that you're doing that but WAY too many of them go over the top and just try to out-gross each other, resulting in crap tabloid radio with idiots calling for their 2 mins of fame.
I know, I know, there are probably people out there that like "Jackass" etc, but count me out!

Mike, agreed,
NSR had a show called "the insult hour". It was absolutely fanatastic. I was all about callers insulting the 2 jocks who were on air Mike Ormond (later kiss 103, FM104 and later various advertising agencies) and kevin Brannigan aka JJ Mc K (later kiss 103, Pulse 103, Fm104 and recently East Coast FM) and the Jocks throwing insults back at the listeners causing massive listener particpation.
If Ger Roe has a recording this should be aired, priceless radio.
It is rarely that I rtemember a cash-call as vividly!!!!!!!

shock jocks always get interest from the public wheather they like it or not , it's called adverse publicity ......
but it depends on the audience and the type of listener you want to connect to and what you can get away with ....
problem is , your average listener probably dosen't know what the term ''shock jock '' means because they 've never heard one .i've heard stern a few times and i thought he was what i would describe as complusive listening , brillant and well prepared ...
but you must remember guys , this is IRELAND , a good catholic GAA nation which must never be offended at any time and the IRTC unfortunately are SOOOOOO stuck up their own pathetic backward ar**s they cant realise radio in this country needS a kick in the B****C*S
no prob guys , a james whale or kenny everett would be a breath of foul air on the awful dial we have put up with for too long ....
not everybody may agree it's just an opinion .
ps ....check out mojo radio ......

"dont think Shock Jocks (who *really* shock) will ever be big in Ireland simply because we are still a pretty conservative country"
Although I personally dislike shock jocks that actually sounds like a good argument for having them !!!!!!
"The Insult hour" actually went on all night I have about an hour of it on mp3

radio friend,
I must agree with your choice of mojoradio.com from Toronto. Their sister station mojoradio.ca is on from Vancouver but seems a little less "risky" although also aimed as an all bloke station.
Listened to Mojo radio.com much of the day today replacing our normal daytime work choice in our office of www.wpst.com for much of the day
