Good to see Mark back on. A very underrated DJ who should be back on national radio used to love his comedy sketches on Today FM (one of the few genuinely fun-to-listen-to breakfast shows)

Mike, are you sure its not Robbie Fogarty, because both Jocks sound remarkably similiar just a thought. The reason why i say that is Jim and Deb or on vacation and correct me if i'm wrong but i did hear Robbie Fogarty's name been mentioned as the jock filling in for them by another presenter on 98Fm the other day.

Given that I cant hear 98FM here (unless I drive up Divis mountain) Ive no idea mate.

Hence my comment about "should be on National radio"

Fair enough Mike. I guess Mark Byrne deserves to get a gig on National Radio at this stage. I gotta say one is very surprised he hasn't been snapped up by 2 FM or Today FM or Red FM in Cork.

However, I wonder do some people think he sounds better on formatted radio? The reason i think that is most jocks don't say an awful lot on our Dublin Commerical mainstream stations and in addition they are all pretty standard and predictable sounding and each of the stations are highly formatted of course. Nothing wrong with it, its just do the big boys in National radio believe he is capable himself of making that transition to a wider national audience per se. Any thoughts?

Euan AFAIK Mark was on both national stations at some stage. He packed his bags with radio ireland when they poached Iano to take his place

Mark Byrne was also on FM104 for a short time back briefly in 1999 period. John Taylor i guess is happy to have someone like Mark to add the midas touch to 98's already very talented jock line up during their daytime schedule

mark byrne has a nice plesant voice and will never offend anyone which is why he suits 98 .
but he's just another typical irish radio dj with no real special talent and will never stand out for hiswicked sence of humour .
good dj but a touch boring .......just an opinion thats all..

A good Dj without a doubt. Although he always plays it safe on the radio with his links too safe and clinical to be precise. As you say staying alive probably to the extent where the listener would find him just a little boring from time to time. You gotta have a creative ability where the DJ doesn't have to say awful alot but it makes an impact with the listener. For example, a funny thing happening to him or someone else, where his personality comes out on air. You just get the sense that you don't know Mark Byrne's personality period, because he's literally doesn't feel ,comfortable saying very much, or else he's muzzled by the hacks at 98 to say a few words and that's it. Sad i guess.

I'm glad someone has said this.I remember Mark from the days he did shows with decks on the top of a washing machine and whilst I always believed he deserved to do well in radio,he certainly does not display any extraordinary talent and he seems to have found his level on 98FM.

Of course, Mark was another talent once found on Beaumont Hospital Radio...........

Sorry Euan, he was in 104 well before '99, and for well over a year... he moved over to 98 purely for money reasons (nothing wrong with that, I hasten to add, done so myself). I was working in 104 at the time so can pass this nugget along with confidence.

If only you knew

Mark Byrne was long gone in 99! Shows how much you remember of Irish radio. He left it in 1997, went to 98, then to Today and returned to 98 I think "it's good to be back on a station with some listeners" was his opener when he went back to the Malt House??!
