i met a very well known radio dj on saturday nite giging in a well known music bar in dublin
the guy had the place in a frenzey , great music, but his 70's /80's set was something worth talking about and a party athmosphere developed ...{great night }
only problem was {as we shared a beer together into the late hours } ,he was working for an agency and wasn't getting the full monty as we would say , in other words he was getting about less than 50%of the usual fee normally paid for a dj of his ability .
so i beg the question everybody , do radio jocks have to rely on an agency to get extra work ???? and why ???? ...
most agencies only get gigs in music bars and normally struggle to get quality dj's because most of them are only beginners and will do anything for a gig {but thats ok ,we all need a start }
my argument is : agencies are only out to undermine the buisness and make a quick buck regardless of the conciquences and to witness a dj working as hard as he did makes one realise {sound like prince charles now ,sorry } no matter how good you are , theres always someone worse to replace you ...
most punters out to party on a weekend night dont really care who the dj is or which radio st he works for as long as they have a good time , but an agency will throw in any joe bloogs just to get buisness and a radio dj will make them look more professional than they really are ...
most clubs {mainstream }will go for jocks with a decent reputation and have tons of experience within the club scene and a lot of them find it easy to get regular work ......
but ......to see and hear this guy on saturday nite makes me wonder how agencies can destroy and criminalise the dj industry by paying this particular dj half of what he was due .
we really have to do the decent thing and make sure dj are not exploited in this way .........especially the guy off the wireless i heard on saturday ......
thanks ......
