I was DJing after a band on Saturday night, this band were a five piece and were fairly ok, you know nothing special. So they are finishing at 11.30, at around 20 past they go into this mad Booker T type set and start saying "On Bass Mr Joey Bass... and he does a bit then "On lead guitar Mr Joey Guitar player" and he does his Jimmi Hendrix impression , then Cosy powell on Drums etc. This goes on for a Full 10 bloody minutes!!!

Then they finish.... and I kick in, or so I thought.

One guy comes running over (to the tiny little bit of space at the very side of this massive stage they had left for me to set up) and says they are going to do an Encore!

Has anyone else encountered this with bands?

Not so much the encore bit - most bands I've encountered are pretty au fait with the fact that you'll want to kick in straight afterwards to keep it going and tip you off accordingly - but more and more bands are bringing so much stuff that "tiny little bit of space at the very side" definitely rings a bell.....it's very unprofessional of them.

Good tip here Chesney. When your setting up, pop up to the band and between songs ask them what song/s they are ending with. Once you do that, they know your on their side and they will usually show you a lot of respect from thereon in. Often bands have their set written out so try sneak a look at that if you can (If you find out their end set without asking them, it's major kudos to you in their eyes!); that or ask them their last few songs so you won't be caught out and made look the fool. Bands never "just" kick into an encore so they know full well what they are up to so act in control and don't let them push you around. I'd also make a point to find out the band's name so you can say thanks to them after their last song this makes them have to pause and lose momentum, also it splits the night into your set and their set and they will darn well know it.

That being said, no excuse for them to kick into a song at your expense.

Whatever about them thinking that they were worth an encore, It drives me nuts when a band takes over the entire stage at a gig, fair enough if its a small tight space thats fine as there is nothing anyone can do about that. But in the Berkley Court or Burlington when you could actually fit an orchestra you get a three piece throwing flight cases all over to fill the thing.
