192 is CD quality ........... I cant really hear the differance myself between 192 and 256 or 320. Anything below 192 is very noticable in the mid range/vocals

Its not just bit rate that matters but which codecs they use.

128 with a good codec can sound as good as 192 on a poor one

so right Mike! I have a few 256 kbs mp3's with fucked up endcoding that sound worse than something recorded at 128kbs........ ..its the just give me the mp3 now syndrome......most normal people (ie not jocks!!!!) dont give a shit about sound quality cause they are not gonna brodcast the music or gig with it.

What exactly are codecs and how can they be set/what are the best settings?

Cheers....

Codecs are the encoder algorithm, such as MP3Pro or Fraunhoffer (the original mp3 standard AFAIK). Some are faster than others, some better quality, etc. The best ones are commercial though, and you'll pay for them. Unless you've got a cracked program :)
Most programs will only use one codec, so it's just a case of looking for different programs rather than different codecs as such. For example, Cool Edit 2000 Studio will only let you save as .MP3 (FgH). The FgH stands for Fraunhoffer, in some way. Don't ask me what the 'g' is. Easy CD-DA Extractor lets you save as MP3Pro.

i suppose its the same as copying a cassette on to a CDR. Perfect bit rate etc.. but it'll still sound shite.
