The last tune spun on Nitesky 96 was A House, I'll Always Be Grateful, a station standard.
Dave Gahan in the studio if I remember correctly with Conor Brooks and a big gang in Sides Niteclub in Dame Street.
Seems like a long time ago now. :(

Blah I have the Pulse last song here, I can't think of the name of it though. Gone too soon is the obvious choice...
Last song on Energy was U2 - Stuck In A Moment.

Mighty I actually remember the nitesky closedown with Dave Gahan (he subsequently worked in 104 - did Streettalk under his own name Dave McGrath another fella that loved a few pints on air (you know) - the pub downstairs did a lot of business !!
Anyway yeah there was a top 50? countdown on Nitesky and Dave was doing it, I vaguely remeber MattDempsey being on with him during the closedown and there seemed to be a lot of gargle taken!!
The Pulse closedown was well orchestrated (the PR machine had kicked in at this stage!!)
You going tonite Mighty ?
The tune in question was by Michael Jackson Turiel. It was chosen by Tony Dixon if memory serves me right. I agree with you also Slick, the Pulse closedown was incredibly tight and well organised
Re; Nova - on the second closedown they went out with Paul Hardcastle - "Dont Waste My Time"

Energy 94 launched with Eminem - The Way I am and closed (while under management of Darragh & Ronan) with U2 - Stuck In a Moment.

Just happened to see this post today and I want to correct this bit - three years later! Capitol Nitesky had Tony Gahan and Dave McGrath, aka David Paul. It was the latter who did the countdown and later turned up on FM104/Rock104 with Streettalk. Great show! Dave Gahan is the lead singer of Depeche Mode!
Anyone know what the first song played by Capitol Radio in its beginnings back in 1983. What about first and last songs of Southside FM in 1988?

The thread is First Song Ever Played - not first song ever played after official launch!
As I recall it was about 1am on feb 1 when the first voice was heard on KFM saying: "This is KFM" and followed by Hey Nineteen.
And has HS said that was also the first song played on Beat, with a similar announcement at a similar time!

Reckon that that criteria might make it more difficult to identify the list accurately - AFAIK, U2 Pride is the recognised "first song played" on Century, but it was definitely the first played live at the official start time.
I'm not saying you're wrong, Tabasco; just that the phrase usually (rightly or wrongly) refers to the first official song played during live programming - e.g. I have a tape of Madonna's "Like a Prayer" fading between left and right speakers as the engineers did test transmissions for Century beforehand, but U2 is the one that's generally quoted as the "first song".

Think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who can remember the first song on a Test transmission - the relief at the signal appearing, then audio, then RDS, then stereo dulls the mind to the music been played! and normally you have are miles from the studio so you have no control on the tracks been played !

Let's see:
first and last tunes in any or all of the three temporary licences of Premier FM,
first and last tunes in any or all of the two temporary licences of Choice FM,
first and last tunes in any or all of the two temporary licences of The Rock (I ought to remember the second closing tune, but I don't!),
first and last tunes for Christmas FM.
What about : the opening and closing tunes of any of the FIVE temporary licences that Joe Doyle was involved with: Hot Country, CIMR and IMR?
In relation to Phantom FM, I know that its opening tune on October 31st, 2006, its first day with a permanent licence, was Today by The Smashing Pumpkins. But what were the opening and closing tunes for Phantom during its two temporary licence runs in 2003 and 2004? And what about opening and closing tunes for Phantom as a pirate - started November 1997 (as Phantom) and ended May 2003? On a related note, does anyone know the opening and closing tunes for Spectrum - started July 1996, not sure when it finished. Still on a related note, what about the opening and closing tunes for Coast FM - started September 1991 and ended February 1996?
Does anyone know what the opening tune for Lyric FM was - started in 1999?
Then, going back to some previous queries of mine. We know that the last tune played by Capitol Radio/Nitesky Radio was "Always be Grateful" by A House on New Year's Eve 1988. But what was the very first tune played on Capitol Radio way back in 1983? And maybe the first tune played by its nightime alter ego, Nitesky Radio which was unveiled in September 1986. What were the opening and closing tunes of Southside FM during its brief time on the airwaves in 1988?
Can any one help?

Some people are saying that the station launched at midnight.
ELO was certainly the first song with a presenter on air and Gareth O'Callaghan, for it was he that was first live, said it was the first song played live when he gave it a soin.
He than later said that the station officially went live at midnight :)

It should only count when there's a live presenter (as opposed to a dead one?)
