Has any jock really struck you, the very first time you heard them on the radio, as sounding very fresh, and vibrant? They just have that special on-air presence? Here are a few that I thought were, the first time I heard them:
Chris Evans (on BBC R1 Breakfast Show – Even though I had already seen him on TV, I just couldn’t believe how fast he spoke on the radio!)
Tim Kelly (Today FM)
Colm Hayes (when I first heard him on 2FM, late 1980’s)
Maurice Taggart (Q102, then moved to Q97.2 where he does the Saturday night party show)
John McLaughlin (on Radio Nova (Donegal) – has been on many other stations since)
Roy Hall (Q101) – I had heard his voice on voice-overs on Q, but heard him presenting one evening and thought he sounded very fresh.
Mark Byrne – (On Atlantic 252, also FM104 around 1995, and later on Today FM’s breakfast show)
Peter Collins (on 2FM)
Bob Conway (on 2FM)
Dusty Rhodes (on Atlantic 252)

Being from the north west, the ones I think were tight, had a laugh and were genuine, (ie. not putting on a false image meaning it's radio, not a disco.
Jerry Lang (Downtown)
Joanne Salvage (q)
Jerry D (q)
Paul Burbank
Only a few....
There's more, but with the older I get, and warming to more talk based radio.

Anoraks,
I guess Jason Maine when i always listened to him on Radio Nova Between 7pm - 12 midnight. And i gotta say, listening to him on 104 for his "Nitecap" program, you'd think occasionally, gee, it's like listening to him only yesterday on Radio NOVA. Let's be honest yesterday was a mere 17, 18 years. A true professional in the business. I guess he had and still has a real smooth sexy kind of voice particularly for the female population.
Just on the subject of Radio Nova, a station like that with its excellent jingles, slick voiceover's and radio personalities makes today's sound pretty amaturish. Jason Maine still sounds fresh, but i gotta say, there is a missin link and that is those wonderful Jason Maine ID's and sugary american jam jingles that one misses everynight. However, jason, your still a hard act to follow.
A few more jocks still sound as fresh as ever:
Gerry Stevens,( 98 now
Hugh OBrien ( Dublins' Country 106)
Colm Hayes FM104 of course)
Scott Williams ( MD and Presenter of Dublin Today Lite FM)

Another such presenter, female this time, was Pamela Wilson, when I heard her on the overnight programme on satellite from Limerick 95 back in the mid 90's.

Tracey Lee on (I think) Sunset (or Mix 106) back in the mid-nineties... totally unlike the "big shout" jocks crowding the airwaves, nice, measured, tight links, no bullsh1t. Breath of fresh air. Fair play to her for making a career for herself.

1. Vincent Hanley, 1st jock to really get the national music radio thing and what a great manner with people. Ian Dempsey is his natural successor.
2. Jonnie Walker, Mr. Smooth, the DJ's DJ (not unlike John Clarke used to be)
3. Chris Evans, fantastic, wish he was still at Virgin. Chris Moyles obviously listened to him a lot.
4. Mark Byrne, Mr. Slick Link, sadly missed to my mind.
5. Greg Gaughran, without getting into any of the other stuff, quite simply one of the greatest jocks this country has ever produced.
6. Dave Fanning, like him or hate him, revolutionised music in this country.
I see Euan mentions ole "rockin' the bay" earlier in this thread. He was a real favourite of mine back in the Herbert Street days. What time is he on 106.8? Bloody hate country music but would like to catch up with him!!! Another favourite and surely someone who Hughie must have heard is Shotgun Tom Kelly on K-Earth 101 Los Angeles. Great station!!! :D
